Great for those plants that need a 'more rocky' soil. For my succulents that prefer a little more soil - I mix it in various ratios (depending on what the plant prefers). One thing to note - because of the type of material, it does best with a soak method of watering. (Not so great with watering can or bottle - water drains through quickly and roots are not able to absorb.) Anyway - that is what I have found with my particular succulents. Hefty bag - have used as a door stop when I had an extra. (Dual purpose!!)

My cactus love this soil. I mixed in a small amount of charcoal and perlite and my cactus are doing great. I wish it was cheaper I need another 2 bags of this soil I want to change the soil on my other cactus plants.

I saw this particular soil blend mentioned on a blog about succulent care and best ways to grow them. I'd been having some trouble with new succulents I'd had shipped to the *very cold* Northeastern US and kept losing them to drafts and lack of sunlight (despite using a grow light and keeping them away from drafty windows). So I looked into a better soil and decided that despite the very high price for such a small bag...it was worth a shot. We got about 17 new succulents and a few Cacti to plant all in different styles and sizes of planters....some in groups, some by themselves from a new seller on Amazon and didn't want to risk losing all of our plants again by using the "branded", cheaper succulent soil we'd tried the first time. The only problem was that 2 Quarts of this soil wasn't quite enough, so we used gravel on the bottom of the very large/deep pots....then a tiny bit of the *old* branded soil that we thought had contributed to our troubles with the last succulents (just to fill in) and then used this entire bag of the Bonsai Jack soil as the primary on all of them. The bag was empty after planting 17 succulents and cacti....but we feel it was worth it because our succulents are still thriving a few weeks later. We ARE using 2 grow lights now and are watering more frequently because the Bonsai Jack soil isn't clumpy or dense like branded types are. It doesn't have the dreaded "peat" blends and is basically like a fine, dry mulch. We are finding that this "mulch" style is much better for our succulents, but since it allows much faster and more efficient drainage....we are also finding we need to really keep an eye on the plants for limp pieces because we water in smaller amounts at a time, but more frequently with this soil. We water 2 times per week minimum using this, but we're talking a few squeezes of a water bottle....not "spraying" or saturating them. Overall, I'd say if your plants aren't growing well/are suffering....get this! It really helped us keep all 17 plants (so far) without losing one when we'd previously lost 4 out of 4. But I cannot give 5 stars because the price seems pretty outrageous to me. I understand this is hand-blended and contains no fillers....but it's not like it's treated with some sort of expensive hormone or magic dust. It's still just soil. I'd purchase again, but only in an "emergency" mostly due to the pricing. And would recommend that if you *can* perhaps line the bottoms of larger pots with the cheaper stuff and some gravel and then use this for the main level. Even a coupon on occasion to "stock up" would be great. Overall, this is top notch stuff, though so if you want the "good stuff" you have to open up your wallet!

Good stuff, good mix for general cactus pots also makes an amazing top layer for succulents and things that get a more organic soil compound as well. Have bought several bags of this and will continue to do so.

My succulents love this stuff! I had never heard of it before and didn’t know something like this even existed. I found it while reading about caring for succulents that were struggling after being planted in soil. It does take some getting used to and there is a little bit of a learning curve with watering but once you and your plant adjust it’s easy. I end up watering my little friend about 1-2 times per week (once her leaves are squishy) because this doesn’t hold in moisture like the big box store name brand soils do. The bag is very small but succulents don’t need much so it will last quite a while. Overall I’d say it is a good value if you have small succulents and can adjust to the watering difference.

First time purchase for my first time planting cactus and succulents. Good product. My cactus and succulents are doing great. It looks like a good quality product…now I wouldn’t know because I have no experience planting these things ..and this is my first time but I am very satisfied with the gritty mix. Would definitely recommend and buy again.

I am extremely impressed with this Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix as the overall quality of the ingredients is far superior to standard potting soils. The first thing I noticed is the clean and consistent appearance of the mix which looks very professional in the pots and provides an excellent aesthetic finish. It has a good solid weight to it that ensures stability for both small succulents and larger bonsai trees.The plant suitability of this mix is outstanding because it provides the perfect fast draining environment for any plant that is sensitive to overwatering. I have seen a noticeable improvement in my plant health since switching to this substrate as it prevents root rot and allows for much better airflow around the roots. Considering the protection it provides for my rare plants and the fact that it does not break down or compact over time it offers fantastic value for money. It is a reliable and high performance product that I would highly recommend to any serious plant enthusiast.

2 quarts is not much. The product is pricey. Yes. The benefit here is convinience. 5 stars because I know what I am buying. These guys have done the work of sourcing good gravel and bark for you. Most cheap gravel you will find smells like gasoline. This product is great if you need a few pots worth. It is a good mix and looks great in contrast to your plants. Happy with it

To all the new succulent enthusiasts (just like me), you will never overwater your succulents again. You will need a pot with drainage hole tho. So far all my succulents are growing new roots and so healthy. The only thing is that you have to water more often than soil mix. The product is a bit pricey but worth every penny. I highly recommended this product.

I've started a small collection of succulents and tried the cactus and succulent mix bought in big box stores. Some of my plants did not like it at all and started to rot. I read up and on Bonsai Jack Succulent and Cactus Soil Gritty Mix #111, and gave it a try. I have repotted my succulents, and they seem to be thriving so far. The water drains quickly, so I don't worry about root rot anymore. It is a bit pricey, but it's worth it if you are investing in varieties that are not readily available. I hope other Bonsai Jack Products become available for Canadian clients.

This soil is perfect for succulents and bonsai, great drainage, even mix of particulates, and easy to look at. Its unfortunately quite expensive (At the end of the day, its a bag of soil...). That said, I will either be purchasing this again in the future or trying my hand at making my own soil.
