Simple, Reliable, and Perfect for a First Apartment Kitchen
We had one at home, but we bought the Aroma Housewares ARC‑743‑1NGR 6‑Cup Rice Cooker for our daughter when she moved out after college, and it has been the perfect starter appliance for her new kitchen. The size is ideal — big enough to make meals for the week, but compact enough to fit comfortably in a small apartment. It cooks up to 3 cups of uncooked rice (6 cups cooked), which is just right for one person or for simple meal prep. The best part is how easy it is to use. With one button and clear measurements inside the pot, she never has to guess. The rice comes out consistently fluffy, and the automatic “keep warm” function helps her avoid overcooking when she’s busy or distracted. Cleanup is quick thanks to the nonstick inner pot. We paired this rice cooker with The Super Easy Teen Cookbook, and the combination has been great for her. The cookbook gives her simple recipes, and the rice cooker makes it easy to prepare a base for bowls, stir‑fries, and quick meals without any stress. For the price, this cooker is a great value. Amazon made it easy to compare models and find the best deal, and this one deliver exactly what a young adult needs: simplicity, reliability, and consistent results. What We Liked Perfect size for a first apartment Very easy to use — one‑button operation It delivers fluffy, consistent rice every time, and the vegetables come out perfectly steamed. Nonstick pot makes cleanup simple Great value, and Amazon helps you find the best price Pairs perfectly with beginner cookbooks and simple recipes Durability, we had ours for years and we find the same model for her but different color The cover traps the steam and smells perfectly, releasing everything only when you uncover it. Things to Keep in Mind Best for rice and basic steaming — not a multi‑function cooker The keep‑warm mode can slightly dry rice if left on too long Overall This Aroma rice cooker has been a dependable, beginner‑friendly appliance for our daughter as she starts cooking on her own. It’s simple, compact, and affordable — a great choice for anyone setting up their first kitchen or learning to cook.

Perfect Rice Cooker and Steamer--Best I have ever used! A detailed review follows...
First of all, this combo Rice Cooker and Steamer is just perfect for myself or when I cook for a guest. However, for testing purposes, I cooked a couple of meals for myself and a hungry guest! The results is that it does a excellent job preparing meals for two people and in about 25 minutes to 30 minutes time depending on what you are cooking in this combo pot. *The steamer part is enough for two people. The rice part makes enough for up to six people for the rice however. I make plenty of rice for me (one person) and place the leftover rice in tightly zipped zip-locked bags and the leftover rice lasts me up to six days in the fridge (I eat one of these packages of rice at night and pour gravy over it, a sauce or even stir fry etc). *** PROS: + Cooking RICE and STEAMING Veggies at the same time--This unit is made to steam UP TO 6 cups of cooked rice. The amount of rice that I placed into the bottom cooker section was 2 cups of uncooked (rinsed) white rice, which resulted in 4 cups of cooked rice which was plenty for the meal I prepared for myself and my guest. After our meal, I still had 2 cups of rice the next day in which to prepare yummy Fried Rice with veggies (one of my favorite dishes). ***To steam fluffy and tender BROWN (Whole grain) RICE - I added just 1/4 cup more water to the pan and added the measured brown rice. I let it cook for a full 45 minutes. Because I added the extra water, the rice came out fully cooked, very fluffy and did not clump! The taste was great, so now I will be cooking MORE brown rice! + How to steam both RICE and VEGGIES at the same time to be done at the same time for TWO people: 1) I measured the rice into the bottom section and the water as shown on page 9 of this book. 2) I steamed these veggies in the top section as shown on page 15 these vegetables -- ½ Cup of Spinach, 1 sliced Roma tomato (medium), 1 small whole onion sliced in thin slices, ¾ cup of baby carrots, ¼ cup of thinly sliced celery, 1/8 cup of chopped garlic. (I had prepared a very light white sauce before this) and at the end of the cooking, I added the sauce to the steamed veggies and this made a wonderful vegetable and rice dish (with sauce) meal and it was quite filling! + Water - I added the amount of water that the cooker called for with the rice, however, I added good quality bottled water in place of the tap water. + Time to cook both the rice and the vegetable - The rice that I cooked was done in 26 minutes and the veggies also in 26 minutes (I like the veggies tender). So for me, both were done at the same time. I do not like gummy rice or overcooked rice, and this rice came out fluffy! + Making SOUPS, CHILIS, or STEWS (this will serve two people depending on how big the bowls are in each serving) - The night before I made Chili or Stew, I had already cooked my meat and it sat in the fridge until I was ready to make my Chili or Stew. So I then added all of my ingredients to make one of these. Note, it DOES not make much Stew or Chili however, if I make this just for me or if making lots of Chili or stew, I prefer to make it in a large 5 Quart dutch oven on my stove cook-top so there are more servings for others. *Update: Sept 19, 2014 - I spilled water on the instruction manual that came with the cooker and called the Aroma customer service and they are mailing me the same manual to my home to replace the one I spilled the water on at no charge! Also, I went to Google and did a search for Aroma ARC-743 PDF and found the full color manual in PDF! This is the best combo rice cooker/steamer that I have ever owned.

Great little rice cooker!!!
I'm loving this tiny little rice cooker! I used to have a microwave cooker and it was pretty inconsistant when it cooked the rice; most of the time it would be undercooked and it always made a huge mess in the microwave. So I decided to try out this cheap, highly rated rice cooker and I'm so glad that I did. I usually only cook for two people, so I make about .5-1 cup of rice (uncooked). There is plenty of room to cook another cup or two, making this cooker ideal for feeding 1-4 people. It's small, so it takes up very little space on my counter, and the small size also makes it easier to clean. It takes about 15 minutes to make the perfect rice. I took the advice of other reviewers and used a bit more water than the instructions called for. This is definitely the way to go. The recommended water is not quite enough, but it is easy to figure out the correct amount (only took me two times to get it right, and even when it wasn't right, the rice was still decent). I also took the advice from people saying to turn it off when it is done cooking. I have not tried leaving it on yet, so I'm not sure if that would ruin the rice or not. Now my favorite part.... the steamer!!!! I love steamed vegatables, and now I can steam them at the same time that my rice cooks!! I was skeptical at first.... but I tried some carrots and broccoli in there the first time I used it, and they were steamed to perfection! What a great idea! It's less work, less dishes to clean, and it steams it perfectly. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a cheap but fantastic little rice cooker. Great for singles or small families. Cooking the rice is very quick and easy with minimal work, and cleaning the cooker is quite easy as well (no burnt stuff on the sides that would require scrubbing or soaking). And let's face it.... the price is hard to beat! UPDATE: I've been using this cooker for about a year now. I have seen no decrease in performance since I bought it. I use it about twice a week, and it is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. To elaborate on the first review I left.... yes, leaving it on the "warm" setting after the rice has finished cooking will dry it out a bit. Just unplug it once it has finished cooking, or just eat it right away. If you insist on keeping it on the "warm" setting, add 2-3 more oz of water at the start. I have also tried many veggies in the steamer, and they all turn out great! Carrots, beans, broccoli, peppers, peas, corn, cauliflour, the list goes on. And all of them turn out so well. I will use this thing until it breaks!

Small
This is a cute little rice cooker and I stress the word "little". It works well enough, seems to be well made and is easy to operate but I could have saved money by just continuing to cook rice on my kitchen stove, the way I have for years. I love the concept of the steamer basket and all but the capacity just isn't big enough for our needs, I kept it because I used it once, just to try out, but I wouldn't buy it again.

Exactly what I was looking for.
I use this rice cooker 3-4 times a week. It saves SO much time and is probably easier to clean than any other appliance. I've cooked dozens of different types of rice/pasta and have never had any major issues with the final product. - There's only one switch (the resting position while plugged in automatically "WARMS" the contents, and when the switch is turned on it boils the water), so you'll obviously need to play around with the amount of water you use with different types of rice/pasta to get it perfect. - It brings water to a boil faster than a normal stove-top which shaves a few minutes off the cook time. - The steaming tray is effective and works exactly like any other steamer. - There's no audible timer. There's an internal timer that automatically switches the cooker from "BOIL" to "WARM". I find the timing to be pretty accurate and does a good job of not over-cooking. Again, it's a simple appliance so I recommend monitoring your food the first couple times you use it in order to judge the timing. - White rice seems to cook better than brown rice. I haven't mastered the ratio of brown rice to water yet...it normally comes out a bit firmer when you use the typical 2:1 ratio I use with water and white rice. - I've cooked couscous and shredded canned chicken more than anything and it comes out perfect every time. Just bring two cups of water and a splash of olive oil to a boil, add contents, wait for it to boil, unplug the cooker, then let the pasta set soak up all the moisture. It takes about 8 minutes from the time I plug it in to the time I'm done cleaning it. ** The ONLY negative thing I can say about it is the lid sometimes requires a little bit of scrubbing during cleanup. If you fill the cooker up too high, you might see some bubbles boiling out of the steam hole on top of the lid. The bubbles sort of spread out along the rim of the lid and will leave a residue that might require some elbow grease. ** Overall: This is probably the best purchase I've made for my kitchen. The only thing I use more is the microwave, but for making a quality meal in less than 10 minutes makes this a solid investment for cost/health conscience people like myself. Highly recommend!!!

Simple and easy!
Now that I've had this for a while, just want to write a little review on it. My old rice cooker broke (not from this brand and it was a 3 cup) and I searched around for a new one. I decided on this one due to the little steamer attachment on top. Now, I'll admit I've not actually had a use yet for it, as I usually just throw veggies in with meat that I'm cooking on the stove, such as when I make stir fry and things like that. I'm paranoid about meat/poultry not being cooked all the way, so I'll probably not use the steamer top for meat, but eventually I'll get around to that for veggies. The rice cooking part is fantastic. I've had to adjust the water a bit after a few uses, so while I'm glad for the little guidelines in the book, I feel that one full plastic cup of rice needs the next line up from the 1 line in the cup. After that, the rice came out perfect, before it was a little dry, and I'm not sure if that is due to having too much rice, or not lining it up right. But either way, with adjustments, it's fine. The product is a nice red colour, and doesn't feel cheap at all. It's a snap to clean, I always wait for it to cool off before washing it down. As a pro tip, NEVER put the wet bowl back into the base, ALWAYS let it dry completely before putting it back together. Water can collect in the base and break the appliance, or burn on the little hot plate. Ventilation is very good on this product, just point it away from your cabinets to prevent wood warping of course. The cable I feel could be a touch longer, I have oddly placed plugs in my kitchen, and one socket I can't even use due to the placement of the refrigerator (I'm in an apartment), so I share two plugs between a microwave, toaster, mixer and now this, so I'm constantly unplugging and plugging things in again. A very minor nitpick, but I feel like I should mention it for people who have awkward plug placements. All in all, a very nice product that I don't regret getting. As of January 2016, this cooker is still going strong with no signs of major wear. If it ever does break down, I will be getting this kind again! As of January 2020, the cooker is still working!

Steamer basket is poor quality although cooker works
I have a difficult time rating this rice cooker. It makes great rice and steams well. Unfortunately, the first time we steamed broccoli one of the handles on the steamer melted all over the counter then broke off. I unscrewed the other handle and will use without handles - although that’s a bummer!

The little rice cooker that could!
I absolutely love this rice cooker. First and foremost, I received this same rice cooker in red as a Christmas gift from my mother last year. However, I felt daunted by it after one use (where I didn't properly read the manual and used far too little water) and it sat in my cupboard, unused, for quite a while until my boyfriend threw it out by accident as he thought it did not work. On a quest to 1) make healthier dinner choices and 2) find a use for the vegetables that I use for my work lunches before they spoil, I decided to come back to the original rice cooker that I didn't bother tackling before. This time, I chose a different color because white was less expensive than any other color -- which is always great to remember to double-check when you're purchasing on Amazon. At $17, compared to what they sell for in local stores (roughly around $23 at time of writing this), I felt like it was a good deal. For the beginner to rice cookers, you should always remember that you should take every opportunity to "spice things up a bit" -- that is, go wild with your spices that you add to your water! While it may be silly, I didn't even really think about this -- I had this vision of "vegetables and white rice" in my mind when I saw my rice cooker before. Not true! You can change the spices up so many ways to have very different tasting dishes. You can also add a chicken bouillon cube for extra flavor -- just make sure to stir your rice very well after you've finished cooking! In regards to steaming vegetables, I often throw an array of vegetables together -- leftover onion, asparagus, cabbage, etc. I also use frozen vegetables. Yes, frozen! I rinse them with hot water under the faucet in a strainer, drain, and transfer to my steaming plate. I've found that they taste just fine in a hurry and, quite honestly, it's a great way to save on grocery costs, too. I would suggest trying it out! I personally like to salt and pepper my vegetables before I put the lid on top, since it will fall down into the rice during the steaming process. Always remember to line the hands up with your rice cooker and steamer, since it helps ensure no "loose" spots where steam can escape. I always add my vegetables a little over halfway through the cooking process -- I've found that the directions that Aroma provided (while quite awesome and I reference them frequently for cooking times -- a really great instructional pamphlet!) to be a little too long to steam vegetables. Trial and error. You will find your preference. I've haven't tried to steam meat yet -- that may be an adventure down the road... In regards to cooking brown rice, remember that brown rice has a different texture than white rice if you've never had it before. It's a tiny bit chewier. The directions in Aroma's pamphlet that reference the water lines ONLY refer to white rice -- but they have included directions for brown rice. I always use the provided measuring cup to measure -- never continental measuring cups because I've always figured that they've done all the work for me in figuring out what is most suitable. I usually do have to cook it more on the longer end of the spectrum when it references times in the booklet. Basically -- if you're thinking about getting a rice cooker, I would recommend this one! It's not too advanced and it's fun to play around with, particularly for a person who lives alone or in a relationship. I think you may need a larger rice cooker if you're looking for something for a larger family. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I look forward to trying to make non-rice items, too, like soups... :)

Love It
I LOVE this rice cooker. First off, it's freaking adorable. I keep it on my counter because it seriously gives me the warm fuzzies. I am a single person and spent a long time searching for something affordable and not for a family of 12. I've used it at least once every single day for the past 4 months for my morning oatmeal. It's so nice and easy to press the button and go shower or whatever. In regards to the bottom sticking issue, I have recently found waiting about 10 minutes after it clicks to 'warm' lets the bottom layer cool off and moisten so it easily releases with the included paddle. For rice it works great. Follow the instructions and everything will be okay. Allow it to rest after it switches to warm for super easy to scrape results. If you are super hungry, open right away and devour scrumptious rice. Let bottom layer soak in sink, it will clean right off. Yes, if you make larger quantities, molten hot water squirts everywhere. This does not bother me, I simply wipe it up. The steamer works like a charm. I usually just put water in the bottom and veggies in the top. If you are some kind of kitchen timing savant, go ahead and put rice in the bottom and then poach salmon and steam asparagus spears in the top so they are all done at the same time. This is a simple unit that brings whatever inside to a medium boil and then flips to warm when most of the water is evaporated because it gets hotter and triggers the thingy inside to pop. Keep adding water and it will go forever. Do with this what you will. It will take a little practice to get things the way you like them, like with any appliance. I religiously use plastic only for cooking and cleaning and the teflon coating is still good as new. For the price this is a really good buy. I recommend this product! :D

Great Rice Cooker
We've been using this for several months now, and although I haven't had the opportunity to use its other features, it does the job of rice cooker very well. Exactly like the basic Walmart model I used to have, fill the scoop with water twice for every time you filled the scoop with rice, assemble and turn it on. It's easy, if I put the rice on before I start cutting veggies for stirfry then it's done before I am, and it the removable parts clean easily in the dishwasher. I only put the bowl on the top rack as I've seen a few reports of it warping, but the lid always goes on the bottom and the scoop/spoon go wherever they fit when I'm loading. Everything survives and comes clean easily! The only thing I would say to watchout for is spray during the cooking process. I'm used to some startchy rice water escaping through the vent hole in the lid on a ricecooker and I always set it on a kitchen towel anyway to avoid a mess on the counter, but this particular model requires me to use only my longest towels and arrange them strategically. The vent hole ejects stray rice water forward nearly a foot, and not only does this result in a messy counter, it stings when it gets you as you're cooking nearby!
