This one is very nice. It works well and lets me feel confident that I am keeping the my fireplace insert at the temperature that it needs to be. I have changed the way that I use the insert since I have gotten this thermometer. Recently I checked the top of the stack after I had a fire going for a few hours and keeping it in the best zone. Temperature at the top of the stack was around 250 deg F, safe zone for creosote. The Inferno is a USA made product, steel construction with a wire bail for removal. Magnet works good and its easy to read. If it ever stops working I would buy another. If you don't have a surface thermometer for your wood stove this is a great item and in my opinion a great choice.

Accuracy is close enough
Works well enough to serve the purpose for which it was designed. Digital IR thermometer shows that this unit runs a bit on the cooler side, perhaps 30 degrees. It's close enough for what it's designed to do. I just want to know that my burn temp is above creosote level and below high burn. I have a new ceramic coated wood burner and want to make it last for many years of heating my home. Easy to read and close enough in accuracy that I recommend this unit for anyone who has the need to monitor the surface heat of their stove.

An excellent stove-top thermometer -a vital component for safety in wood-heat
I am still using this to keep my house from burning down! :)I have an Oslo wood stove. Oslo being Norway's capital, one would be correct if one would assume that the Norwegian-manufacturer would save this name for their best stove and one that has been made for one-hundred years or more. I have used this seemingly-simple device for approximately 4 to 5 years. I'm not going to brag; but I have not had a house-fire YET, as I have paid CLOSE attention and kept my fires within the desired and safe burn-range clearly-denoted by the white area on this thermometer. It works as-advertised and is quite well-made.Some things you ought to know: That safe burn range is between about 300 and 600 or 650 max degrees Fahrenheit. Below that temperature, you are coating the inside of your flu with creosote. Once you reach 300, if you can sustain 300 to 500 degrees or so, you will burn it off, keep your house warm, and not have to worry about the risks of a chimney-fire, as long as your flu is KEPT CLEAN, as in a chimney-sweep needs to clean it CORRECTLY at least once per year, all the way back to the stove!Another thing is this: Even my chimney-sweep cannot comprehend this and he puts my STOVE-thermometer on my FLUE PIPE every single time he cleans. I now say nothing and simply move it back. There are TWO types of these thermometers! One BELONGS on the flu-pipe, but ONLY if it is SINGLE-WALLED. It CANNOT read the temperature accurately on double-walled pipe (like mine)! Hence, I use the SECOND type of thermometer. This one is clearly-advertised as a "stove top" thermometer. It belongs on the STOVE -not the stove-pipe. So, this is an important distinction; and I believe all that utilize such means of heating their homes will agree that the little details like these are vital considerations and must-have information when dealing with a wonderful, archaic method of heat that can get out-of-control QUICKLY if one does not educate themselves in safety.
