I use a cheap 2TB hard drive that looks like it will hold about a months worth of recording
I run two cameras on this NVR recording two sides of my house. I use a cheap 2TB hard drive that looks like it will hold about a months worth of recording. Seems to be a decent NVR for the price. I learned the hard way to make sure that you use TrendNet cameras, and also though the cameras will go to 2048 resolution, they can't be set to over 1920x780 for the NVR to work. (I bought the cheaper refurbished Trendnet cameras and they work fine. Initially tried Brickcom cameras and though the Trendnet NVR advertises support they wouldn't record for more than two days which was bizarre. Tried over and over - two days and brickcoms would magically would quit recording). You can't show more than one camera live on a TV screen at a time because it doesn't have the display horsepower. But it appears to simultaneously record both cameras fine and I have no reason to think it won't do 4 cameras. Playback works good and you can export clips easily. The PoE ports work well also. Web interface is ok, but you are better off plugging it into a TV and using the mouse that comes with the NVR as that interface is easier to navigate. Playback has a 1x, 2x, and 4x. I wish it had an 8x as well. 4 stars since it cost me $200 extra for new cameras because Brickcom wouldn't work.

DO NOT BUY
I should have listened to the reviews on this NVR, DO NOT BUY IT. Most of the info about it is misleading. Like what you ask, well TRENDnet website says this NVR is compatible with the TRENDnet 4MP cameras, well it is kinda. I called tech support about this model NVR and they confirmed that this model will not support this model camera at its highest resolution.. I bought this NVR and 2 TRENDnet 4MP cameras and I had to setup one at 720p and the other at just 1080p just for them to show on the screen in live view or I would get a message "No Resources." It took me 2 days and 2 calls to tech support to finally get this setup and running and I'm not a newbie at this stuff. I work with camera systems at my job but use only FLIR products, I see why now. Ended up having to update the firmware and change all the network settings on everything just to get it to work. I don't know how the "Plug-n-Play" cameras would have work but my guess I would have run into the same issues. As far as operation of its what you would expect for the $. I bought a WD 3TB drive for it, installed easy. SATA cable was almost not long enough.

Excellent device, highly performant. Software is very poor and needs a significant update.
This device works as advertised. It powers my 4 cameras, and works well as a stand-alone NVR. It support extremely large HD's, so easy to record 2+ weeks of video. All of the software is difficult to use and setup. It is difficult to setup the cameras and get them recording. No real feedback to let you know that the recording is working. Accessing the system from the network has less than 1/3 of the features one would want. It appears to be designed mostly to be a stand-alone device. The smartphone application has practically no features other than a live view. You cannot review any recorded material from the smartphone app at all. The NVR software does not support changing ports on the cameras. There is a field for the control port (default 80), but if the port is changed it does not function. the RTSP port cannot be changed at all. I bring this up as remote access through a firewall requires Port Address Translation (PAT) which is very difficult for the average user. Recommend that you use a 3rd party app to view the video on your smartphone. I use LiveCams Pro.

Low end but fully functional and adequate
For some changes such as download path to save it requires using IE as an Administrator. While the documentation and box states it only works up to 4tb. It can use 6tb drive as advertised. The add correctly states that it only goes to 720p. Box, documentation, and manufacturer web site say it is 1080p. It's not.Continuous recording to internal drive can only be 1gb file size. The settings for 512 or 256 only work for recording to a pc drive via the interface.Downloaded files must be converted to a compatible format for OS viewers. VLC free viewer works fine without conversion.

Really hard to configure. Could use some modern technology
Good NVR to start with. Had a lot problems with Trendnet products lately. If your going to buy a hard drive don’t go small! Go for a surveillance type drive. This fills them fast even on 720p. This one took me 3 days to setup. The network settings are very picky. But once it’s running it’s good. Get a UPS to plug it in too so you can keep your cameras and NVR going 24/7.

Good solution, regret for not buying kit
I bought this to test to see if I would like it and to see if the installation was easy. I wish I had bought the kit instead of the stand alone. For now, I purchased a 4 MP from TRENDnet and it works great. The camera is connected to NVR, while the NVR is connected to my TV in the family room. It's great for monitoring outside activity at your house without having to go to a window. Setup and installation of the camera was easy. After initial setup of the NVR, the cameras was literally plug and play.I need to purchase more cameras for my house, and this is where I regret not purchasing the kit which comes with 2 cameras and a hard drive.Setting up the NVR for remote viewing on my phones was a bit challenging but not too hard to figure out. I needed to setup UPnP and Port forwarding with Dynamic DNS. Searching for solutions through Google seemed easy enough, just tenuous. Overall it does what it's advertised, but I do wish I had got the kit.

refurbished unit was not refurbished, just put back in new box and sold
I thought I would save a few dollars and buy the refurbished version, not a good choice with this NVR, it should have been set to factory defaults but it wasn't , it would not accept the factory default password of "admin", it still wanted the original owners password. Their is no factory reset button or pin hole anywhere on the unit like most network products have, and it kept beeping in 30 second intervals, which after a little research I found that the beeping noise was probably because the NVR could not find the cameras that the original owner of this NVR had connected to it, so if your going to buy one I suggest spend the extra $30 dollars and buy it new.

Lack of third-party support
Really impressed with the pricing unfortunately didn’t work with my custom CCTV IP cams so had to send back

stay away!
Terrible product with even worse support - it works sporadically, is not compatible with most of TRENDNET cameras! The cameras that do work only work on VERY specific settings (resolution/framerate,etc). When I contacted Trendnet about the issues with this unit, they said to contact Amazon for refund. After I received a replacement, the issues persisted (since it's not a faulty firmware, but poor product itself), Trendnet simply refused to do anything about it.

Buon nvr poe
