Is the track compatible with thomas the tank engine take-n-play trains?

No. The Thomas take-n-play trains are a little too small. Their wheels are too narrow to fit in the grooves.

Is it compatable with the Melissa and Doug train sets?

I think so. I think the Brio and Melissa and Doug sets are compatible.

what size is the roadway - inches wise? I would like it to match up with the road I will put down around the lego city

The grey painted roadway measures 3 inches. The entire piece of wood measures 4.25 inches end to end. Hope this helps :)
