is this product genuine or is it a copy

its a copy. non genuine batteries, charger was part labeled for a blackberry, dimmer seems not so smooth. But it does work and is pretty bright. Although I don't know how it would compare to the original.

How do you charge the batteries, do you have to take them out or can you plug them into a car charger?

The charger plugs in to a 110volt outlet. Then it is plugged into a connector mounted in the headband. A small inverter could be used in a car.

Can the light be used and 'on' while charging? Would this be a good light for up close electronics work?

The Light cannot be used while charging. That is why I have two. It is very good for up close work. It has an adjustable aperture for floodlight or pinpoint. It even has an adjustable output control to vary the lumens.

How many AAA batteries does it need? I have seen that it needs 3 and sometimes 4, so it's kind of confusing ...

it takes 3 AAA batteries. with this model they are rechargable. had mine over a year and use it everyday, never had to change the batteries yet.
