how does this compare to the merkur razor?

If you're referring to the merkur 34c , that is very mild in comparison to the chieftain, the Chieftain is very aggressive you have to apply almost no pressure when shaving but it is a very nice piece for the experienced shaver . It's on the opposite spectrum because I find the merkur 34 c to be a bit mild but it's great to use after a couple shaves with the chieftain, yeah but I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver , mix it up with some viking blade adjustables

I just purchased mine. As of 2020, this model Chieftan is different from the BAILI bd179. It's 10 grams heavier, has a thicker base plate, and has 4 lather holes on each side rather than 2 oblong ones. That's not to discount the BAILI at all. I just preferred the heftiness of the Viking. And you can get the "Odin Obsidian Black and Gold" for just a few dollars more as it's currently on sale.

Where can I buy replacement blades?

Any double edge razor will work.  I would suggest looking for a trial pack, they will give you several brands to try and you may get 3 to 5 blades per brand they ship you.   
It’s an easy way to try different blades to find the best match for you.

Amazon carries them, they are all over the internet, eBay, etc.   I got one that was like 6 dollars and I got about 6 different razor companies, that were all well known.  Good luck with your adventures in shaving!

What is the difference between the godfather and the chieftain razors? thanks ken from new smyrna beach fl
