VDV501-851 Scout Pro 3 Tester Starter Set Cable Tester

This is a really great tester. Having the ability to identify lines when you have a bunch of drops was fantastic. I used it to debug a flaky line that had break near the connector. I could watch the lines drop in and out and identify the issue quickly. The built in remote (ID 1) is detached from the unit and checks phone, ethernet and coax. With this you can verify proper pair connectivity and wire length. The kit also came with 5 identifier units (ID1 - ID5) for both coax and ethernet, but these are only checking wire pair 3-6. I kinda wish they had given ID2 through ID6 and I could have used the main unit as an extra connectivity check, but 5 is better than 1. Unit is really solid and comfortable to hold. The display is simple, but easy to read and backlit on demand, so very useful when in the bottom of a wiring closet. This is a tool I wish I had gotten a long time ago. It takes the guesswork out of small issues and can really save some time for those bigger jobs.

Works great and it's very reliable.

The product functions as described and is easy to set up and use. It is very intuitive. For instance, I plugged the RJ45 connector into one socket and the other end into a different socket. I immediately received results indicating a short circuit between wires 4 and 5.

I must be honest, this kind of felt a little like bait and switch to me. I love Klein tools, and I have since Tech School in '78 and have a toolbox with many of them in it, they are great. My previous tester, a 20 year old Fluke Micro Scanner Pro, which recently gave up the ghost, has the far end terminators that are dual purpose, testing and ID. So based on that experience when I saw Klein Tools had a tester, I was ecstatic and dropped it in my cart, only to find out after it arrived I did not know how to use it. Ok, time to RTFM, but even doing so is not straight forward, reading the documentation requires direct side-by-side experimentation to make sense of it due to poor grammar and incomplete sentences. To sum it all up as I said I am a Klein fanboy and IMO they missed the mark on the marketing of the tool and with the documentation containing incomplete sentences and vague language it’s super confusing to figure out how to use it. So, I am docking one star for that and needing to buy the upgrade kit to get functionality that should have been provided with the main testing tool, or at a minimum, clearly called out that only ONE of the terminators is dual purpose. All that being said rest assured it works flawlessly as ‘almost’ advertised.

Great buy

I needed a good cable tester, but didn't want to spend $350-$500 to replace my old unit. This had all the basic features, cable test, tone, one remote, hub blink, backlight for display. I got the kit with a few additional remotes too for multiple cable scans. So far so good. I've used Klein hand tools for years and the cable scanner seems to be in line with their quality. It is a basic scanner though, and the cost reflects that. Seems to be durable so far, would recommend a case.

It’s very good to find the problem and easy to fix it

Excellent piece of kit and a very good price. The feature set on the scout pro 3 is very good as it encompasses a cable tester, cable toner, cable length guide, and also tests cable for rj11 and coax. Having the ability to run cable length tests on each cable pair is very handy as this will give an idea where the fault lies if the cable tester reports a fault on a particular conductor. Having the ability to tone from this device as well (paired with the klein probe) is a very good feature as it means you don't have to carry lots of different testers in your tool bag. One other great feature is the HUB blink option. When plugged into a wall port that is plugged into a switch, the HUB blink mode will slowly flash the link light to identify where the other end of the cable is connected. Overall this has a large number of features that mean you only need to carry one tool in your bag to fault find or verify cables. Thaddeus benefit of a back-light also means you can read the results in low light conditions where ever you may be.

Great product

It worked for few days, after that always gives Failed POE hight voltage even if the the cable working fine and Fluke device showed the connection is Passed. Also measuring the cable distance keeps changing each few seconds
