An excellent resource for long term thinking in the sport
If you want to make triathlons a lifestyle choice; past your first attempts; then this book really helps visualize a whole year or season and think about how to structure your life around the demands of the sport and life. I’m fairly new, with only a year in and still just aiming to finish a race, rather to excel at it and still I found a lot of be learnt here. The whole long goal perspective and layering of improvements over years and the respect given to downtime and recovery, really appealed to me. This is definitely a book that you’ll want to reread annually as you plan your new season. At time I wished I read this book last year, but I think without the experience of the past year it’s hard to fully grasp a lot of what is being said.

Excellent resource. Miles above the previous edition.
I found the last edition to be a slightly dry and difficult to enjoy reading. It was still an excellent resource but I would compare it to riding your bike indoors - you don't want to do it but you know you should. This edition is amazing. It is true that Joe has not simply edited the previous edition. This is a totally different book. It is presented in a very organized manner, flows well, and is easy to read quickly while still providing a wealth of information and benefits. In my opinion, it is a must for any age-group athlete.

It's all good quality reading and writing and thus may not matter ...
I made the mistake of thinking that the new version would contain extra pages. But in reality it is some 50 pages shorter than my old copy of the third addition. It's all good quality reading and writing and thus may not matter to most. Though I do not dislike the newly edited version, I think some of the changes seem a little cosmetic. The diagrams were easier to understand in the third addition and I wish they had stuck with them. I don't think many of the updates will make a huge difference for many of us back of the pack individuals though. It is Still a master piece and must read.

Amazing source of knowledge.
I'm half way of the reading and I love it. However it's NOT a beginner book. I been told 100s of times about this book but I wasn't ready to read it. Now Im because been doing triathlons for 3 years. Im exactly where the author recomend to read his book. I don't need tips how to swim better. I need knowledge and experience how to swimm faster. I don't need tips how to get prepared for my first triathlonI. I need the expertise of a coach how can I run faster and recovery pronto. finally, I don't need tips how to rest before my big day. What I need is the mental preparation and strongest set on mind how to perform to my heights level. That is what this book has 30 years of experience in triathlons. I already see results and improvements in my training. I don't regret not read it before because I wasn't ready. if you are tired of mediocre finish in races like I was. If you are not reaching your full potential and don't want to pay for a couch this is the book you need in you book shell.

As thorough as any resource you'll find
I have no idea what the reviewers who say it's too complicated and for advanced athletes only are talking about. Comprehensive, detailed and as well-organized as any training book I've read. I don't even do triathlons but this book has so much good training advice it was well worth the price.

Triathlon Must-Have
This book is comprehensive and deep. Friel establishes his credibility and then gives you a practical framework that will help you be the best athlete you can be. With an EMPHASIS on training so you won't get hurt. As an actual athlete, navigating the training nuances to avoid injury is the most difficult part, and Friel devotes many words to addressing this.

Incredibly Informative
I picked this up when I decided to do my first triathlon, and I loved how detailed it is. It may be more technical than some people want for their first attempt, but, as someone who loves getting into the nitty gritty of training, this book is fantastic. I didn't use everything during my first training season, but it's the sort of thing that will continue to be useful as I explore the sport.

Best bet not only for triathletes
I started running at the age of 42. That was seven years ago. I am neither a triathlete, nor at a competitive age. So why in the world would I buy this book? I still have dreams about running, and I am sure this book will help me. I have read Daniels, Lydiard, Pfitzinger, Owen, Livingstone, etc., etc, but these didn’t do much to improve my running. They are at much higher levels than I am, which is because I haven’t followed them consistently. Therefore, I have had very little success. My only success comes from Daniels’ Running Formula, when I followed a plan to the letter for one season. But I ended up overtrained and injured. An attempt at Lydiard led to more injuries, and so did Pfitzinger’s Advanced Marathoning. Friel has a different approach. Instead of giving you a plan, he makes you develop your plan. And that plan is your custom plan that will work for nobody else. When you read this book, you will find that Joe is actually talking to you. And he does this with very clear words. His explanations are very easy to understand. And it all makes sense right from the start. I trust Joe. I am starting my marathon preparation next Monday and will have 28 weeks to see if all of this works. I am going to run the marathon in Rio de Janeiro, which is famous for being in grueling hot weather. I have run this marathon before. And if I can make it any faster than the last time, then I would say this is thanks to this book that I am studying very closely. I will post the results here. Right now, I think this is one of the most readable training books I have seen. And I have seen lots of them. It doesn’t read as technical as most others, but I guess that just because of Joe’s writing talent. I truly believe this is a great book not only for triathletes. Runners of all distances will find this one especially useful; probably more useful than most books that were specifically written for runners.
