Question 1

We have been successfully using a Gentle Leader, but don't like explaining that it's not a muzzle.  Is this a good alternative?

They have their own brand of no-pull harness which I have had great success with.  I too didn't like explaining that the leader wasn't a muzzle.  A no-pull harness isn't the solution for every dog.  I tried this brand of harness on 6 dogs (I foster) and it was not effective on any of them.  5 of them respond well to the Premier no-pull harness (same brand as gentle leader).  Every dog is different.  I would suggest going to the place you bought the gentle leader and looking at alternatives.  Good luck!  Also keep in mind that this style of harness can rub on the armpits of some dogs.  I recommend no-pull harnesses to all of our adopters and one adopter used it on the dog they got from me and it rubbed his armpits raw after one walk.  Another friend had this happen as well.  These have all been dogs with very short coats (Boxer, Pointer).  The freedom harness does have padding so should reduce this, but again, it did not work to help reduce pulling for me.

Question 2

Is this harness easy to apply to the dog, or does a person need an engineering degree and a perfectly still dog to put it on?

Very easy, but first you need to get the permanent adjustment correct then you are always good to go, even for a wiggly pooch. One of my std poodles often stays in her bed while I put it on for the park. I hold the martingale part, slip it over her head letting the chest piece drop down with the clips. Then I can clip one side before she stands and the other side when she heads for the door. I managed it for two dogs with an arm in a cast. Piece of cake. I highly recommend getting the leash. There is a video out there that shows you how to train the dog to let him put the harness over his head , but we never had that issue.

Question 3

Is this a harness that can be left on the dog all th time, or will the dog be able to chew it?

My lab is the most difficult dog I've ever had to walk on a leash , and this is the best harness that I've found to control her. However , I left her in my truck while I waited to pay the veterinary bill , and by the time I return to the truck she had chewed through the harness . I will purchase it again because is the best way to control her. If anybody out there has a better harness , please let me know .

Question 4

How to measure to get right size I see that seems to be the big thing. I want to do this right. Thanks for the help.

To get measurement for the correct collar, take a tape measure and wrap around dog chest area right behind the front legs while dog is standing.  If your dog is like mine and sits just put a finger under the tape measure and use that measurement.
