Mechanics of Pre-industrial Technology: An Introduction to the Mechanics of Ancient and Traditional Material Culture

I'm interested in pre-electrical technology. I was hoping for a book that provided a more practical explanation of how things worked and how they were built. It was more like light hearted reading for 3rd year engineering students. I don't think medieval man was too interested in the theory. He just knew it worked.
