what are the poles made of and how are the bottoms of each pole configured?

The poles are made out of metal and the bottom of each pole is in the shape of an inverted letter "U". This allows you to place your foot on the top of the "U" and press it into the ground. The beverage holders are a real plus!

Does this hold a total of 4 drinks? Two on the scoring device and two on the separate beverage tower?

Yes, just as you stated. This is a great item and we never break out the corn hole boards without it. Makes score keeping SO MUCH easier.

OK, how do you get this thing back into the storage box it came in?

You cannot put back in box once the cup holders are installed without unscrewing them. We store the towers standing upright next to our cornhole boards. In winter, if you could wanted, you could unscrew the pieces to place back in the box for 3-4 month storage.
