Don’t even bother with anything else - DupliColor is IT
DupliColor has done it again! This stuff is honestly a game-changer. So far, I’ve used it for repainting my Mazda emblems/badges (I jumped on the blackout bandwagon, no regrets!), as well as to help prep for a clear sealant coat on a craft project. Admittedly, it worked better on the car badges, but I can only assume that’s because I was able to sand before spraying this. It still worked great for both, and I certainly couldn’t have gotten durable results on the craft project without this, but a light pre-sanding is the way to go whenever possible. For the craft project, I needed to seal some vinyl lettering on a small metal sign. I bought it from the store pre-painted, and I’m not sure what type of paint was used, but it’s very durable and very smooth. Pre-scuffing before applying the vinyl wasn’t an option, and I was nervous that the clear coat would peel from the painted surface, so after applied the lettering, I sprayed it down with I think 3 light coats of this product. After applying several coats of a triple thick clear coat and letting it cure for a week, I have had ZERO issues with anything. No flaking, peeling, lifting or adhesion failure at all. And the adhesion promoter is crystal clear and goes on so smooth that you can’t even tell it’s under the clear coat. It lays down REALLY well; doesn’t leave any weird texture or anything, and a little goes a long way (at least, for my smaller jobs; I can’t really speak to the coverage per can on larger jobs like auto body panels/bumpers/etc.) I just bought another can of it as I’m planning to paint my clear acrylic makeup organizers when I refinish my vanity. I WILL say, though - this stuff has a VERY strong smell that lingers, so make sure you’re using it in a well ventilated area with a good crossflow of air, and wear a high quality respirator mask with clean filters rated for organic vapors. I like the 3M 6001 with the kit that allows you to clip on a P95-P100 filter in front of the vapor filter. The strong smell is really the only downside to this stuff, but it’s worth ‘fumigating’ the garage for final results that look great and hold up extremely well! I’ve not once bought a DupliColor product and wound up disappointed or underwhelmed. There are MANY reasons why the DIY automotive community consistently recommends their products, and this hella smelly miracle in a rattle can is one of ‘em!

Handy for small plastic paint jobs
I grabbed this adhesion promoter for repainting some scratched interior plastic trim in my car studio, right next to my desk where i keep client samples. I washed and scuffed the pieces, then hit them with a couple light coats from this can. The color coat gripped way better than when i skipped primer on a previous project, no weird fisheyes or random peeling. Smell is strong though, so i had to crack the window and run a cheap fan, which made spraying in my tiny room a little annoying. The nozzle sprays evenly but clogs if u don’t wipe it between passes. For quick plastic fixes and prototype mockups, it does its job and saves me rework.

Great Adhesion and Smooth Finish!
I recently used the Dupli-Color ECP199 Adhesion Promoter before painting my car, and I’m really impressed with the results. This product works exactly as advertised, providing excellent adhesion for automotive paint. I used it on plastic trim and metal parts, and the paint went on so much smoother and more evenly than when I didn’t use it. The aerosol can makes it super easy to apply, and the clear formula means no visible color change on the surface. I noticed the paint adhered much better, with no peeling or chipping after several weeks of exposure to the elements. It dries fast, and I was able to apply multiple coats of paint without worrying about the primer disrupting the finish. The 11 oz. can provides plenty of coverage, and the price is reasonable for the quality you get. Highly recommend this for anyone planning to paint automotive parts — it definitely makes a difference in the longevity and quality of the finish!

Helpful step for better paint adhesion
I used this adhesion promoter as part of a small automotive touch-up project before applying color and clear coat. The main surfaces I worked on were plastic trim pieces, and it seemed to do exactly what it’s designed to do—help the paint bond better. The spray goes on easily and dries fairly quickly, which makes it convenient when you’re layering primer, paint, and clear coat in the same project. The fan spray nozzle gives decent coverage and makes it easier to apply an even coat without concentrating too much in one spot. Since this product is essentially a preparation layer, it’s a little hard to “see” its effect directly. That said, the paint applied over it appears to be adhering well and the finish looks smooth so far. Nothing has lifted or peeled, which suggests it’s doing its job. In terms of value, the can goes a reasonably long way since you only need a light coat to improve adhesion, so one can should be enough for several small projects or touch-ups. The spray itself is quite thin, which is actually helpful because it lays down evenly without building up thickness that could affect the final paint finish. It also blends well with the surface and creates a uniform base layer for the top coat, making the paint job look smoother overall. Overall, it seems to work as intended and is a useful step if you’re painting plastic or other surfaces where paint adhesion can sometimes be tricky. For DIY automotive touch-ups, it’s a simple extra step that likely improves the final result.

Enhanced Adhesion for Lasting Results
This adhesion promoter by Dupli-Color truly delivers on its promise of enhancing paint adhesion for automotive projects. The clear primer in an 11 oz. aerosol can is convenient to use and provides a strong foundation for paint to adhere to. Its effectiveness in promoting long-lasting results is commendable and has certainly improved the quality of my paint jobs. While the product excels in its adhesion-boosting capabilities, some users may find the spray nozzle a bit tricky to control, leading to potential overspray. However, with careful handling, this minor issue can be easily managed. Overall, the Dupli-Color ECP199 Adhesion Promoter is a reliable choice for those seeking improved adhesion for automotive paint projects. Its clear formulation and convenient aerosol application make it a practical and effective solution for enhancing paint durability.

Pain adhered remarkably well to shiny chrome insert on trim piece.
I wanted to have the side scuttles on my "new to me" used 2015 Mini Roadster. I had purchased new ones in on black, but didn't like the way the color looked on the car so returned them and decided to try spray painting the chrome part of the side scuttle. The second photo shows the car at the dealership before any of my modifications. The first shows the side scuttles after I spray painted the chrome section black and the last shows them installed with a smoke light added also to complete the all black new. Although I had attempted to sand the chrome part, because it was so shiny and slick, sanding did little to rough up the surface. I applied a few layers of the adhesion promoter prime to just that chrome part after taping off the remainder. It left the surface tacky and in appearance much like what a car looks like after you apply paste wax but before you buff it out. I think applied 3 coats of the Dupli Color Black followed by a couple layers of a clear coat. They turned out exceptionally well. If I was doing it over I might not have taped over the black part and rather painted the entire thing. As it is you get a bit more definition because you have the metallic black car with a matt black side scuttle with a shiny piano black insert. The smoked light is a LED one that runs orange across the face when turned on and while impossible to capture looked fabulous also with the newly painted section. I would definitely recommend this product. I wish now I had spray painted all the chrome bits I have replaced rather than purchasing new ones. It was super easy to do as well. Counting the cost of the 3 cans required to paint this, it was still slightly less expensive than purchasing all new ones.

Helpful for my old plastic chairs
I bought this to freshen up some ugly plastic patio chairs in my rented apartment. The landlord’s set is sturdy but super faded, and i didn’t want to spend on new furniture. This stuff goes on pretty light, so I do a quick dust coat, wait a few minutes, then hit it again. After that I spray my color and it actually sticks instead of scratching off the first time someone sits down. The smell is strong so I only use it outside and wear a cheap mask. My favorite moment was dragging a chair across the concrete and seeing almost no paint come off. For the price, I’m really glad I tried this instead of replacing everything.
