Genuine Giro performance meets edgy, urban style. At first glance, the Surface is an understated skate-style helmet with a clean exterior and a fashionable short brim. But beneath the stylish exterior, the In-Form fit system provides comfort and stability. The Surface also offers outstanding ventilation thanks to its deep internal channeling. And lastly, the brim not only gives a nod to style, but keeps the sun out of the rider's eyes while on a commute or a mountain ride. With it's understated style, and disguised add-on features, the Surface is the ideal helmet for urban commuters, all-mountain riders and dirt jumpers.

Exceptional value and fits well on a large head, comfy and cool.
I have a large dome and have trouble finding helmets and hats that fit properly. I've worn auto-racing and motorcycle helmets for years (I used to sell them as well) and know the product and how it's supposed to fit. My large and longish knob is hard to fit but the unique suspension in this helmet makes it fit right away. A turn of the adjusting wheel and all is comfy and snug as it should be. I've experience no "hot spots", which usually feel like someone drove a spike into my forehead, and no other discomfort. The helmet runs quite cool and I experienced no overheating or other discomfort.I've never understood the wild and just plain silly shapes of most helmets; most look to me like expensive substitutes for a tinfoil hat to repel "the voices" and most seem to offer very little in the way of protection for the occipital region of the skull. This may be a question of perspective, but this helmet feels more like a helmet than some kind of colored beany sitting perched on the top of my head.Buy one; it's a good product.

Shell slips back and forth
The first problem was sizing. Though I always wear a medium in hats and other helmets, the medium was far too big on me. I don't have a particularly tiny head, but even the small could be a bit tighter.Secondly, the glue that holds the shell and the rest of the helmet together has completely stopped working, and the shell will often slip away from the interior of the padded helmet, which it uncomfortable and dangerous.Given all that, the helmet fits fine now, and is actually really comfortable (just a bit roomy on the sides). Though the shell slide around, the buckles are fastened to it as opposed to the interior, so while its buckled and I'm biking it can't slide off entirely. Not the highest craftsmanship, but its comfortable, does not soak up much water when it rains which is great, and the style is very trendy these days if you're into that. All around, I would go with the equivalent Bern model. I borrowed one from a friend, and you can tell right away the difference in manufacturing. Its more expensive, but when dealing with the safety of your head, you can't spend enough!

cover the graphics but its still chunky
I already had a helmet -- a Bell Lumen -- when i purchased this one, but I wanted a more "urban" style helmet -- something that provided more coverage of my grape, in particular the occipitale bone.I got this giro for less than $20 bucks because of the color -- green with cyan creatures. as such, it is a "good deal" if you don't care how you look. I'm trying to find some tasteful stickers to put on the helmet to hide the awful artwork. The fit is not great -- its like having half a watermelon chunked onto your dome piece, and even after tightening the wheel lock in the back and properly adjusting the straps there is still some play. I noticed a red mark on my forehead after wearing the helmet for some time.overall i think it is an ok helmet and it def provides more surface area protection than my Bell, but its kind of heavy and chunky and the fit is awkward, so for those looking for a multi sport helmet in this style i recommend something else.

Fits well after some adjustment
I normally wear a size XL hat, which I attribute to my thick skull more than anything else. It does make it hard to fit a helmet that fits well, though. When I first got the Surface out of the box, I used the adjustment dial to make as much space as possible inside the helmet and put it on, but it still squeezed my head in an uncomfortable way. I was debating whether to return it but decided to watch the video on how to adjust it and realized that there was another adjustment besides the dial--you can pop the whole rear pad (the part that includes the dial) out of the helmet's interior and move it down. After a couple experiments I found the height that fit my head properly, and then I was able to tighten the dial a little to make the fit a little more snug around the sides. Now it fits great, comfortable but also tight where it needs to be.As for the look, from the photos online it reminded me of a polo helmet, but when I got the grey version out of the box it actually reminded me and my wife more of a German Wehrmacht helmet. It also looks like it sits a little high on the head, though as I said it does actually fit fine once adjusted.

Stylin' on the Road
I really hate the way bike helmets look -- but since moving to Seattle I have realized that I may either: be ticketed for not wearing a helmet, or become a brain-dead vegetable at the hands of a crazed city driver. Enter...Giro Surface.Yes, it makes my head look very orb-like. BUT...it's got cute fabric detailing, a sweet rim for keeping misty rain out of my eyes, and it's LEATHER. Quality leather that feels supple (even more so after I put on a little mink oil).I have worn this thing every time I've been on a bike since -- and I don't even feel like an idiot! Giro Surface, thank you for protecting my brain parts and my dignity on the road. One thing-- the fabric appears to be a knit cotton or similar -- but in person seems to be a viscose/poly fabric that is printed with the color stripe detail. It is not "Black Plaid Fabric" but a black, tan, blue stripe. Not at all a dealbreaker, but I thought it would be a little "nicer" looking.

I really like the "scroll-wheel" style head size adjustment
I got the hi-vis helmet, stuck a ton of reflective tape on it, and haven't yet been hit by a car, in the year I've been using it, riding on city roads (knock on wood, eh?)The adjustments on it have worked well for me. I really like the "scroll-wheel" style head size adjustment. The strap length adjusters have been fine, though I needed to knot the excess chin strap length to prevent it from loosening over time.I haven't yet tested the helmet in a crash (knock on wood again), but I trust the thing, should it ever come to that.
