A Complete Guide to 180 Healing HerbsโFrom America's Favorite Herbalist In this handy companion to his best-selling book, The Green Pharmacy , leading herbal authority James A. Duke, Ph.D., delivers the lowdown on virtually every healing herb available in today's marketplace: its description and history, therapeutic uses, medicinal properties, prescription counterparts, dosage options, safety and effectiveness rating, and precautions. Dr. Duke's inimitable folksy tone and friendly manner shine throughout The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook , making it as entertaining to read as it is practical. The most thorough and comprehensive herb reference of its kind, the handbook was culled from the thousands of entries in Dr. Duke's database of the world's medicinal plants. The database, which he began during his career as a top botanist with the USDA, is a lifelong project for Dr. Duke and has become a major reference resource for herbalists worldwide. Review: Easy to read and understand - Easy to read and use. I use 2 of the herbs this book recommended. One of the herbs helped with my heart issues. Review: We refer to this book often - We are trying to find alternatives to some medications which cause side effects. This handbook has been very helpful, and we always check with our doctor before adding any herb to our regimen. Our 9-year old granddaughter gets very car sick, and we read about ginger for motion sickness. Her doctor OK'd it, we bought some chewable "Ginger Trips" for her, and it worked like a charm. Please read the cautions for each herb, though, as some can be dangerous when combined with certain prescription meds such as blood thinners etc. Our pharmacist has also been very helpful in guiding us. Sure wish American medicine practiced more herbal treatments instead of prescriptions with sometimes very bad side effects.

... Book on medicinal herbs and it was just as good as the previous 2
My 3rd purchase of a James Duke Book on medicinal herbs and it was just as good as the previous 2. A solid 5 star rating for information, scope, and his usual smattering of humor, laced with the random anecdotal comment on his vast range of experiences chasing the medicinal flora of the world . A must for everyone new to herbal medicine and certainly useful and informative to the more experienced, bridging the gap between clinical practitioner and home health practitioner. Would love to talk plants to the Man.

Reliable expertise
James Duke's book "The Green Pharmacy" was one of the first few I read about herbs used for healing. It still has a place in my bookcase. This book has much more complete information about the plants included, and seems more geared for the level at which I practice now. As a nurse and now a trained herbalist, I like the mention of pharmaceuticals used for the same treatment goals. The last 14 years, I have studied both herbs and prescription drugs extensively. Dr. Duke's scientific yet down to earth approach is greatly appreciated. This book will find use as a reference for both the pharmacology lectures I present, as well as those about healing with botanicals. My thanks to Dr. Duke for another winner.

Not the Usual A to Z Herbal Reference Book
Concise, easy to use reference. The Prescription Counterparts, Dosage Options, Safety Ratings and Precautions listed for each herb provide insight not usually found in A to Z type herbal reference books. Part Three, Guide to Conditions, offers an extensive list of health problems that benefit from specific herbs covered in Part Two. Each herb is discussed in a page or less, but Dr. Duke's decades of herbal research are shared generously in each herb's commentary. This is not a book that teaches how to grow herbs or make herbal preparations, but it's perfect for those who want to put together a personal supply of the most effective herbs and their doses for a wide range of conditions. Using this book is like having the great James Duke as your personal herbal mentor.

Very Informative
The format of the physical book is not my favorite---the Mass Market paperback is not my favorite. Gives good background for the herbs, not for things outside of that (Kelp, sea salt, calcium sources, etc)---so that's what the title is and doesn't disappoint. Practical application (e.g. Take 1/4 cup of yellow dock and 1 cup of water....) is not present, but that is not the purpose of the book.---good reference book!

A Serious Reference
This is a well-written reference for the serious herbalist. Unlike "The Green Pharmacy", this book tends to discuss the herbs, rather than the problems that need them. There is a table at the end of the book that references the herbs to the malady, so all is not lost. I would recommend this book as a desk reference for the herb-savvy physician or the ND, or even a well-read herbalist. I have already recommended this book to several of my herbalist friends. It belongs in any herbal library!

duke is the best
great treatment of herbs, up to duke's usual incomparable standards. good price & shipping. good condition. i wish i could get to his world famous "6 acre herbal vineyard" at his house in fulton, maryland. i wish the gov't had been bright enough to put jim duke in charge of the fda, but then, that wouldn't have worked so well for the bottom line of BIG PHARMA! however, the rest of us would be healthier & there wouldn't be as great a deficit in the budget. just dreaming!

wow
I really was looking forward to this book from the information I read about it and was not disappointed. The most phenominal aspect to the book was not only the safety ratings plus the number of actual herbs presented but the dosage options. This has been a feature lacking in many books through out the past. I have looked for a comprehensive herbal book for years and this was well done. The design in which this author presented each herb was easy to read and follow. A must have for any serious herbalists library.
