Grizzly H0465 6-Piece NPT Tap Set

Just what I need for chasing threads prior to assembling parts. Very good quality taps and a usable box. Nice addition to my toolbox.

These taps are not the highest quality, but they work and the threads they cut do, in fact, seal. I'm not sure I'd try cutting hardened steel with these but they've gotten the job done every time I've used them.

These taps are not made of HSS steel. They are made out of Gcr15( AISI 52100). It is a high-carbon chromium alloy steel; That is why they are so cheap. They can't last as long as HSS and anyone can do a spark-test to see for themselves. HSS steel is approximately 6 times more expensive then the HCS Chromium Alloy Steel.

Drilled the correct hole for a 3/4 NPT. The teeth of the tap shredded themselves off so the threads were not useable.

Don't count on using the "wood" box for very long. More like very thin plywood and mine came in with a broken hasp and the box lid broken off.

The die set is well made and performed as required. Would recommend.

Nice set, have not tired it yet, box hinges are fake on mine. Looks good as far as taps are concernd and yes I'd buy it again, lets hope I don't have to.

The description here says these are high speed steel. Grizzly's Web site for H0465 says they're generic "high carbon steel". There is a big, big durability difference between HSS and carbon steel in taps. That probably explains why people are having durability problems. I ordered a set before I discovered this, and am keeping it because my main application is tapping plastic anyway. The set seems to be well cut and won't require much if any cleanup. But it's not OK to sell carbon steel taps as HSS.
