If you have a dog that gets tear stains you must must must give the dog filtered water. This product is one of the easiest to use and since it doesn’t have a motor you don’t constantly have to replace it all the time. I have Westies and Shih Tzu’s both white. Once I learned that giving filtered water will keep the orangey stains away I was hooked. If you are first starting out with trying to get rid of the stains. You must be patient. The dogs/cats will need to drink this while the hair grows out. Slowly once all the new hair coming in is missing the stains just trim away the orangey parts. Then once all the hair is clear of the orangey stains the hair will always stay clean as long as you continued to give your dogs filtered water. I also can tell you if you also notice that if your dog chews on a paw and it leaves orange stains before using the filtered water, once the hair has grown out and you clipped away all the orangey parts. If your dog/cat starts chewing it licking their paws the hair will not get orange again. Again, the key is to use filtered water. I found for small dogs this was the best way to go. If you have a large dog, get a larger tank. You will also love how you don’t have to fill the dog bowls as much using the tank. Lastly, there are other products that look similar but don’t have a filter. Everything I just said won’t work unless you have a filter. I promise you it works better and is cheaper than the products on the market that say they will get rid of those eye stains. Try it. Having 4 white dogs with no tear stains or licking stains is how I know this works.

Note: The lone product picture on this page (as of 4/28/2015) doesn't match the packaging on the Replendish I received. The paperboard on mine contains helpful information I would've liked to know prior to purchase, so I've added several pictures to this review to help other shoppers. Here are answers to two common questions I noticed in the product page Q&A, and wondered myself before receiving the Replendish: yes, the unit is BPA-free; and, yes, it comes with one filter. ____________________________________ First impressions: We have three cats, though I purchased the Petmate Replendish 1/2 Gallon Waterer specifically for two of them: they happen to be water connoisseurs. Their preference is drinking from faucets, and no unattended glass of water has been safe in this house for the eight years that we've had them (sisters from the same litter). After rinsing the pieces of the unit this morning and filling it from the connoisseurs' favorite faucet (judging by their preference, we ought to bottle the water from our guest bathroom's faucet and sell it at Acqua Panna prices), they immediately took to the Replendish without the scrutiny with which they typically regard new things. Our third cat, however, who daily goes into what we affectionately refer to as "stealth mode," crouching low and nervously gliding across the floor each time she notices anything is out of place in a room, regards it with her typical level of suspicion--but after about an hour, she drank from it several times. The Pieces: Altogether, the Replendish unit consists of five pieces: the base, the clear reservoir, a black cap that acts as filter housing at the mouth of the reservoir, a filter, and a plastic strap that secures the filter inside of the cap. The plastic strap is a bit of a pain to snap into place over the filter; it took me three attempts, even though I have small hands and wear my nails short. The mouth of the reservoir is threaded, so that the filter housing cap screws on to it. Then, the entire assembly of the reservoir twists about a quarter turn into the base, locking it in place. Observations: First, I'm very pleased that, with the filter in place, the water flows slowly from the reservoir into the bowl; the result is that it isn't noisy. We bought Drinkwell Platinum Fountains at two different points over the years, and the cats never got used to the loud (and sudden) gurgling and bubbling that occurred each time the equilibrium shifted enough for the reservoir to dispense water. When I first put the Replendish down, our connoisseurs began drinking without any regard for the fact the reservoir was actively dispensing and quietly gurgling. Next, one reviewer had mentioned the 1/2 gallon size didn't work for them, as the opening of the bowl was too small and too near the reservoir, so that their cat didn't like it due to its ears and whiskers being crowded. I nearly purchased the 1 gallon model as a result of that review, because our cats won’t eat out of small bowls that crowd their whiskers. However, being a starving college student, I opted for the less expensive 1/2 gallon, and the cats don't mind it. The only trouble with this size is that only one cat can drink at a time. Another reviewer indicated no instructions came with the unit, and so it took trial and error to figure out that the filter needs to be removed from its plastic wrap, and secured by a plastic strap included with the unit. As I noted above, the paperboard that came with my unit is different than the product picture, so perhaps it didn’t previously come with instructions, already assembled, and clearly labeled. However, mine arrived with instructions; the pieces were already assembled, so that by disassembling them it was impossible not to see how to reassemble them after removing the plastic from the filter and rinsing the pieces. Further, the filter housing and strap are clearly labeled as to their function. Bottom line: assembly and disassembly are simple and fool-proof. Many reviewers (and those that provide answers within the product Q&A section) seem to omit the filter. I don’t know how useful the filter is for actual filtration, since, unlike in a powered fountain, the water from the bowl--which tends to accumulate fur and crumbs of food--isn’t being continuously circulated through the filter. However, I will continue to purchase filters for the simple reason that using one causes the water to dispense slowly and quietly from the reservoir. Overall, our cats are happy with the Replendish thus far, so I’m happy with it, too. Though the opening of the reservoir (see pictures) is small enough that a bottle cleaner is required, the base doesn’t have any awkward or tight spots to clean, like Drinkwell Platinums, which are full of nooks and crannies. I’ll revisit this review in one month with an update as to whether the cats and I continue to love it. In the meantime, feel free to post comments on this review should you have questions! _________________________________ 5/29/15 Update: I still consider this a five-star product for what it is: a waterer. The cats still like it, and drink more from it than they would a bowl of water replenished as frequently. However, this is not a be-all and end-all product for me, because it requires more cleaning than a bowl (since the Replendish has more parts) or a fountain (since the Replendish doesn't circulate). I recommend this product to anyone who prefers a waterer, but will continue my search for fountains, as I do prefer something that circulates and filters the water supply.

I have had 4 dogs for about 30 years (obviously not the same 4 dogs but I’ve had a total of 4 dogs at once for 30+ years). This has been the best waterer I have used, with one flaw. This is the 3rd one I have purchased in about 10 years. I thought I was ordering the exact same one I had but what I received is different. I use the 4 gallon bottle because 4 dogs. So I fill it about once a week to two weeks. The jug is easy to fill and easy to put on the base. The flaw (and the reason why I have to purchase another one) is in the jug around the neck. There is a plastic band that goes around the neck to sit the jug on the base that eventually weakens and breaks. You can’t buy just the jug so here I am with a whole new waterer. With that said, with the old waterer, when putting the jug on the base, it does kind of plop down into the base. You can see in the photo how large the black cap is. That goes down into the base and clunks into position. This new one set down very easily and didn’t plop onto the base so maybe this one won’t take as much stress as the others in the past. This one set right down where it’s supposed to go with no clunk. The cap is different so maybe this was the fix??? There is a basket that pops off for the filter and easily pops back in. It screws onto the jug very easily and the lid has a new feature that is like a float so the water bubbles out instead of just pouring out. I wasn’t too sure about it so I kept the other cap which fits this jug as well and I kept the other base, which seems more sturdy. But for how well the jug went into this base, I think this is going to last a lot better than the previous model. The bowl part of the base is larger too which is nice when more than one dog is trying to get a drink. Overall, I’m happy and the dogs are happy. The first 5 photos are of the waterer I’m replacing to show the differences in the cap of the jug, the part of the jug that breaks and the base of the waterer. The last 3 photos are the new one I received. If it lasts another 3 or so years then I’m still good with this product.

This was purchased for me from my feral cat colony wish list. The first one unfortunately arrived missing the water jug, but a replacement was sent out and arrived complete. I use it to make sure the cats in the colony have access to fresh water, and the one-gallon size works really well for that. It’s simple to fill and set up, and I’m very happy with it. I really appreciated how quickly the issue with the original order was resolved.

We bought this to keep our giant slobbery indoor heckin' chonka watered for a brief getaway, and on the whole it's hit the mark for that. At 4 gallons of water, with an optional activated charcoal filter pack, this thing will keep your dog(s) stocked with tasty water for quite a while (especially if you have smaller breeds). It's now our everyday waterer, and we fill it once or twice a month depending on seasonal weather. It's very easy to clean, with all the parts coming apart easily, and the huge openings mean everything's readily accessible even if you have larger hands. Between the easy cleanability and the use of Microban, I'd be comfortable drinking out of it myself after a fresh cleaning. It's never grown weird things or become discolored or slimy between cleanings. But. The 4-gallon model is also a giant, treacherous, clumsy mess when it comes time to refill it and put it back together. Unlike most of their older models, Petmate decided not to mold a handle into the jug on this one. While this would normally just make things slightly less convenient, this jug is also completely untextured and extremely slippery. If you don't manage to get the jug and your hands COMPLETELY bone dry, it can and will slip out of your hands, dump water all over the floor, and dislodge the carbon filter so you have to jam your arm elbow-deep into now-slightly-less-than-four gallons of water to reassemble everything. This giant, slippery, unmanageable bottle uses Petmate's twist-lock bottle top, so even if you get the bottle inserted on the first try, you often still end up wrestling with 32 pounds of sloshy slippery bulk trying to get it into its proper groove. Or, if you don't notice the bottle is slightly off kilter, the gravity feed never stops flowing and soon — once again — there's water all over your floor. (But, one the up side, once it's on there even your large dog isn't going to knock the bottle off its perch.) If you don't absolutely positively need the largest model, go for a smaller one. If you do, plan to throw some skate deck grip tape or the like on the bottle, and don't plan on passing refill duty off to your younger kids or smaller partner.

This is our third or fourth gravity watering system, and honestly as long as I have pets, I need one of these. This is the first time with Petmate brand, though. I won't name the old brand, but it was really impossible to clean thoroughly because of a design shape in the basin that would not allow any sort of scrubby brush to really reach in and clean out the crud. This petmate version is nearly identical, as far as the foundational design, but the basin is flat, so there are no weird zones to collect hard water build up and bacteria, like the other. Thats a big bonus. I can clean it completely in about 2 minutes, except for some calcium buildup from our uber hard well water here (that even vinegar soaks can't quite defeat). Just break it all down, suds, scrub and refill. Thats nice. Especially considering that our dogs manage to get really mysterious substances into their water dish sometimes. I honestly have no idea how they do it. Now this particular waterer has a pro and a con all rolled into one, however... It is huge. So the 'pro' is that once filled, its good for our household for about 3-4 days, depending on the weather (e.g. hot, dehydration weather). We have 2 @ 100# German Shepherd mix dogs, and one 50# Pointer, plus 3 kitties coming in and out of the house and sharing this water. When we had only a water bucket on the floor, we had to fill it daily and it got tipped over, played in, you name it. This system is tucked in a corner so the critters can't tip it over as easily. Thats another pro. The 'con', though, is that it is BIG. It weighs a LOT when full. And you have to flip it over (without spilling everywhere) and get it on the floor. If you aren't strong with a good back for lifting and lowering heavy objects, this waterer is NOT the one for you. In fact, as I get older, I debated on buying a new system of this size. If we weren't so rural that we lose power often, sometimes for 3-4 days at a time, then I would have opted for a 1 gallon bucket, but I absolutely love that whenever bad weather is coming, I can fill this thing up and not have to worry for half the week about the animals having access to fresh water. Its a big perk. So if you are physically strong enuf to manage 4 awkward gallons of liquid without making a big mess, and you have lotsa thirsty pets, this thing is great.

We have a wild one year old male orange tabby and he managed to climb the water tower and managed to tip it but it isn't easy to do that and most of the time he doesn't and it is pretty stable even for a cat like this, it's easy to clean and it does hold a lot of water. I found it great for my other cat so this is the second one I bought because this cat outgrew a smaller version. I would recommend it. It has filters that you need to change every so often but they are not expensive and last a while.

Es un buen producto, aquí les dejo fotos de un comparativo del recipiente que tenía antes, la idea de cambiarlo era la dificultad para limpiarlo sobre todo en algunas zonas donde se forma moho, ya que la boca era muy pequeña, en este bebedero la boca es más amplia. La verdad mi mano no entra por la boca del depósito, pero si una mano pequeña o la de un niño, quiero decir con esto que si es más fácil de limpiar, más no es perfecto. Con respecto al bebedero, tiene unas zonas que son más difíciles de limpiar, por lo que habrá que ver después que tan fácil es acceder a estas zonas, aunque no están en contacto con el agua. Compre el depósito de 1 galón por lo que tienes que decidir el tamaño del tanque antes de comprar, el de un galón me parece suficiente para un perro pequeño, si es más grande, recomiendo comprar uno de mayor tamaño. En general estoy contento con la compra y lo recomiendo mucho para los que ya hemos sufrido con otro tipo de bebederos
