The Ayurvedic Cookbook

Tell a friend about this book, that's how I learned about it!
This book came highly recommended, now it's my turn to recommend it.A friend with some severe issues including pain from a serious injury, as well as panic attacks followed by a lethargy that would leave her in bed for days. Over the years I've watched helplessly as doctors of all sorts tried to address her various allments, with little success.A few months ago she went to reunion of some old college friends, one who now runs a holistic spa. After they spent the weekend catching up with each other, the college friend gave her a copy of this book.Over these months I've watched her become less sluggish and her pain, while not gone, is diminished. Her face brightens when talking about how this book explains Ayurveda and how she determined her 'type'. She kept saying how the introduction alone is worth the price of admission, so to speak. So I bought my own copy. Now I get it. All her doctors wanted to treat the symptoms...to use only traditional therapies that in her case, were failing her.The author outlines some of the hows and whys of food as medicine. Since each human body is unique, each person's food need is unique. If you have heard of Ayurveda and want to know more, or if practice it and want to get some great recipes, this is a wonderful book.

Brilliant!
A friend recommended a Mung bean soup to me that a physician had prescribed him for detoxifying his liver. I made it not expecting much and it was absolutely brilliant! My entire digestive system cleared up and worked much better. Not only that, I normally suffer cold hands and feet and this soup warmed up my entire body.Turns out this amazing soup came out of this book. It is absolutely delicious - another benefit I didn't expect. I had anticipated a taste-less soup and it was SO DELICIOUS. I ate almost the entire pot at one sitting it was so good. Not only are the recipes fabulously delicious, they are incredibly healthy for your body.Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old study we are lucky to benefit from - thank you!

Insightful introduction to ayurveda, going straight to the most useful and most important concepts
I stumbled on this book in a house I was renting before I knew anything about ayurveda. I read it and cooked from it, but didn't realize what a good book was is until I re-purchased it 5 years later (and many ayurvedic books later) to re-read.This is a practical and incredibly thoughtfully written book that explains some of the most integral concepts right off the bat, and then gets the person cooking. The first part of the book explains what ayurveda is, and then the rest of it is recipes with additional information and concepts sprinkled throughout in useful side-stories. I was lucky to randomly come across it before I knew anything about ayurveda, and highly recommend it for any experience level. Re-reading it provided tons more value in context of understanding the system a bit better 5 years later in my life, so it is not just for beginners.

The deeper side of cooking
This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!Because of various health problems I was always advised to try different diets but never liked what I cooked. It was always the most boring task. This book has changed my attitude in the most profound ways, where I begin to perceive food not only as a source of nourishment but also a way to understand my own body's energetical needs and how to heal it. It is the most interesting fact to learn the connection between the food and my emotions. Through these quick, simple and most delicious recipes I am learning how to create foods which calm me when I need calming, ground me when I need grounding and cool or warm me depending on the season and the balance in my energy pattern. But it's not only that, I can even effect a positive emotional and digestive change in my husband through dishes that are meant for his type! This book is slowly turning me from "cook hater" into "cook lover" and I cannot wait to try all of those recipes. The pumpkin or sweet potato halva recipe had us on our knees. It is sublime. The Indian tastes are simply like swimming in a deep ocean while the American cooking is more like swimming in a small and shallow pond. Why not jump in on the deeper side of life?

Straightforward explanations of ayurvedic principles and great recipes for implementation
I realize that no book can replace an in-person evaluation from an ayurvedic practitioner, but this book is very straightforward and includes explanations of the basic principles of ayurvedic living and then provides clear dietary guidance through its recipes. I have recently adopted a vegetarian and mostly vegan lifestyle (not wanting to consume any cholesterol), and this book helped to provide guidance in maintaining a balanced approach to eating. I will be trying a lot of the recipes based upon my doshas and will be keeping track of whether my results are in keeping with the guidance provided in the book. I figure that a dietary approach that is centuries in the making is bette than trying random, popular diets that focus not on the content of what you eat, but the quantity / number of calories consumed. I love Indian food in general (though I tone down the heat on many of the recipes I prepare, eliminate dairy and reduce fat content). This cookbook provides excellent recipes for doing just that. A definite keeper cookbook!

RUINED BY BAD FORMATTING!!
The content, writing style and information in this book are all absolutely wonderful. Lots of food wisdom here, but some of it inaccessible. Crucial sections of it are truly unreadable because the formatting of the tables is SO BAD. Didn't anybody proof-read this book? I'm so disappointed in it. Read it with PC app for Kindle, to try and get the maximum screen size. No difference. And of course, the cute font-changing facility doesn't work with tables.
