In the past I've left the agricultural details up to our family farmers who maintain the orchards and the trees and take care of the harvesting. However, I recently inherited a 15-acre slice of the ranch and needed to quickly come up on the curve on the intricacies of planting new orchards including selecting new tree varieties and root stocks, doing soil tests for plant diseases, installing up-to-date irrigation systems, etc, etc. I picked up the hardcover version of the book, and although it's nearly 20 years old, it's served as a excellent means to get smart on all aspects of walnut growing with a single read. The book itself is 300 pages in length in an 8 1/2 x 11" two-column, 10 pt font format...so it contains an enormous amount of information well laid out in 34 chapters drawn from a Univ of Calif Davis short course on walnut growing. I picked it up and read it like a novel over the period of a week to get a broad in-depth overview to allow me to converse knowledgeably with professionals in the field. In parallel, I researched the latest walnut info on the web and in person. Although there are some new trends in the field (like tight tree spacing and mircro-jet watering systems) the fast majority of the book is absolutely relevant to today's growing environment. I highly recommend it...and BTW...the hardcover book has a nice colorful green cover with walnut trees on it...not the generic tan & black cover shown on the desertcart site. It's one of the best technical books I've run across. Review: Book covers a lot of information. - The book includes pictures of a lot of walnut trees in California. I didn't see pictures of the walnut trees I planted in Washington. Also the book covers information for the commercial growers. Having said that, it gave me more information about Walnut trees than I have found anywhere else.
