What makes this part better than the original?

As with any revised part, newer versions have been redesigned to improve on the original design. It has to do with increased oil flow, but you would have to replace with the revised AFM lifters as well to have any benefit. The best thing you can do is to remove AFM all together. I originally was going to replace this cover, but research has proven that you have more to gain by deleting AFM/DOD from your GM engine. I had severe oil consumption problems with AFM at 203,427 miles on my 2008 Sierra. I converted my engine 2 months ago using the kit from Texas Speed and now I burn very little oil and also no longer have to worry about my lifters failing. That's my $0.02...

Is there any way to know if this part is bad and needs to be replaced without going to a mechanic to do the job?

If the solenoid goes bad the lifters will not work good. You would get a miss fire. Normally the lifters fail before this part.

General motors offers a 1 year replacement warranty good at any GM dealer with proof of purchase.
