Putting just a couple of drops of water on, gently rubbing & then shaking them to remove excess moisture worked better for me.Only got the a few days ago, so time will tell if it extend the life, however my physical therapist says getting you skin cell off the gel medium is important as they will cause the meuium to degrade faster.
