Can you squeeze the excess water out to reuse quickly?

Hi Thank you for your enquiry. If you wanted to squeeze the excess water you could although it would still be damp as it does retain the water from the implements that have dried on it. This foldable mat absorbs 7 times its weight in water. You should then let it dry and fold it away, or put it in the washing machine first. If I can be of further assistance please let me know.

does this have a lining on the underside to prevent water from soaking through?

No but if you dry your washing up straight away it's fine. If it leave it it have a lot water can go thru but would say it's damp rather than wet. I have 2 and if the counter top is damp I wipe it down and swop to the other one putting the damp one on a towel rail to dry.

What’s the difference to a tea towel??

It's highly absorbent - much thicker than a tea towel. We're very pleased with ours - we bought two so we aren't without when one is in the wash!
