Norpro Canning Essentials Boxed Set, 6 Piece Set

I decided that I wanted to get into canning so I purchased this kit because it came with many things that would be useful for me as a beginner. My favorite tools in the kit is the wide funnel to make pouring easy with no spills and the tools to make sure that your lid is on properly and tightly. This kit is very affordable and everything in is it very well made!

Good kit for a beginning canner. Made some awesome jam with wild plums! It's not super high quality but it's the right stuff to get you started and the items definitely get the job done. The funnel is very handy and I tend to use it a lot for other food uses. My only complaint is that the image on the box implies that the jar-grabbing tongs (the item just to the upper left of the funnel in Amazon's product image) are rounded, to make it easier to grab the jars from the hot water bath. (Amazon's product image shows that tongs have straight, parallel grabbers.) You'd assume the packaging would have the correct image, and that's what I was hoping for, but what comes out of the box are straight-edged tongs. They make it a bit tricky to pull jars out of the hot water bath, and when you use them you have to pay close attention. (I let myself get distracted for just a moment and broke a jar lol.)* All around good set of supplies. I would recommend these to any beginning canner, or anyone looking to get a decent set of canning supplies at a reasonable price. *EDIT: I upgraded my 4 star rating to 5 because I was mislead by my own ultra-novice mistake-- I was using the wrong end of the tongs! XD My bad! So the tongs are actually pretty good at grabbing the jars. It's much easier to use when you're holding the right end of your tools!

This set is perfect for those just getting into canning. It’s basic but has everything you need to get started, and honestly, it holds up better than I expected. Sure, it’s not top-of-the-line, but for the price and functionality, it’s a solid deal. I’ve used it a few times, and it’s still going strong. 4 stars for being reliable and budget-friendly!

All of these items are very useful but so far I have used the funnel the most and the funnel itself is worth the amount paid lol. I like to make big batches of dried mixes and you CAN jar up the mixes with no funnel but if you don't have to then why would you??

Why did you pick this product vs others?: It contained all of the canning tools I needed.

This set sure saves a lot of burns while canning. I love the magnetic lid lifter for getting the lids out of the hot water. It is a no-miss method and no more burns from the tongs not grabbing then or them sliding off of spoon (and what a pain to get them on). The wide mouth funnel helps get the food in the jar instead of around the jar and that tool, I am not sure what it is called but one end has steps in measured increments so it is so easy to tell if you left 1/2 inch or an inch headspace (there is like 4 different measurements on it) by just putting it on the edge or the jar and looking. The other end of it is great for bubbling (getting the trapped air out between the fruit or whatever your canning). The jar lifters work great and I never dropped a jar yet. They also include tongs which come in handy if a jar falls over while keeping them hot and fills with water. The jar lifter can't grab a sideways jar but you can straighten it up with the tongs and then grab it with the lifters to empty it. I had mine awhile and so far, they look like new and I do clean them in the dishwasher on the top rack. However, I should mention that they are some sort of plastic or in the case of the tongs and jar lifter, plastic-like coating. Although nothing has happened yet, I can foresee things like the funnel cracking and maybe even this plastic coating cracking but even if it does, I got my money's worth.
