As fantastic as advertised!
This lens is everything everyone says it is. Tack sharp, durable build, great features and terrific bokeh. The auto focus hunts a little more than I'd like, even with the limiter switches on. But overall, it's still better than my zooms. The push to lock auto-manual focus ring is an awesome feature though. I wish more modern lenses had this. It has a great DoF and, as I said, the bokeh is creamy smooth with beautiful, round bokeh balls. When using as a portrait lens, you can find no better - great sharpness, color rendering and DoF. When using as a macro, it's a little on the dark side. If working close, like with insects, you will definitely need supplemental light, even in full sunlight. The build quality is superb and the lens feels substantial in your hand - like an old metal Nikon lens. Overall, if you need a razor sharp macro and portrait lens, this is the lens you're looking for!

Awesome lens (if you get one that works)
Edited: Bought this same lens from camera store, dont trust the transport anymore. Worked flawlessly. Picture quality is amazing. Bokeh is very nice and easily achieved. Ring light is necessary if you want to shoot bugs or tiny things unless it's very bright. Still bit scared about the build quality. I've had other sony lenses and never had problems. DMF focus mode (in camera) helps if autofocus is too iffy. I feel that or manual focus is needed for bug shots. Autofocus will suffice for anything bigger or farther away. Original: Just received this sweet macro lens. Hook it ip to 7RM3. Camera display shows "flicker". F number shows --. There's no auto focus. Turning off auto stability. Testing with different focus limits. Nope. Nothing. Happens. Lens doesn't make a sound either. Switch to manual. Also defective. Doesn't focus at all. Oh bummer, like so many 1* reviews here, I've gotten a dud. It was shipped in a original box, looks unopened. Box wrapped in a plastic bag. No extra insulation, bubble wrap. Nothing. Not a conciving way of shipping expensive lenses. Returning as defective and trying another one. Was really hoping getting some bug shots.

Amazon (not a 3rd party seller, Amazon itself) sold me a used broken lens as new.
First off, great lens. Fantastic at macro, great for portrait. If you want a Sony lens with stabilization and fast auto focus, this is the right choice. But you can't buy lenses from Amazon anymore. You HAVE to buy lenses through B&H now. I'm not going to give a product less than a 5-star rating just because Amazon (not a 3rd party seller, Amazon itself) sold me a broken and clearly used product as new. People in the photography community know to never buy lenses through Amazon's 3rd party sellers because of the scams (Google it, it's very rampant and there's a few well-known kinds of high-ticket item scams out there through Amazon 3rd party sellers). And I thought that buying new items through Amazon proper would be safe. Nope. Amazon sent me the lens. The body could not talk to the electronics in the lens, and the lens would not even manual focus. I inspected the lens and saw dust on the last lens element, and then checked the first lens element (the lens that faces the sensor), and saw a finger smudge and more dust. I checked online and found that the lens hood and a protective reinforced bag should have came with the lens and it did not. Unfortunately I had a wedding gig coming up so I didn't have that lens available for the job. So that cost me a little bit. In short, GREAT lens. Can't recommend it enough. But you can't buy lenses and other high-ticket photography items through Amazon Prime anymore. They are selling used items as new.

Great Lens for Portraits in addition to Macro Photography
When I decided to make the move to the 2nd generation full frame Sonys (7RII and 7SII) from my Canon 5D Mk III, I made a post at dpreview forum stating that I had the better (399 dollar) Metabones adapter and would be using my Canon lenses. I wanted to get a few First Party Sony FE (Full Frame) Native lenses that people there felt were the best of the bunch. Despite the standard responses from mean people, there were some very helpful people who said to check out this lens (Sony FE 90mm) as well as the Sony 55mm F1.8 FE Prime. This was excellent advice and I'll totally ecstatic with both lenses. Thanks to the advice of the "nice people" in their Sony Lens forums I bought two of their sharpest lenses that don't have the autofocus hunting problems or lack of sharpness that some of the others are reported to have. I own Canon Macro lenses in a similar mm and was very happy with the Macro functions as well as the fact it makes an excellent portrait lens. (Good for a slight compression effect on faces that even very thin people enjoy, they just make everyone appear better). I'm very happy with both and would recommend them to anyone who's budget includes them.

Great lens, but non-existent software support
I purchased this lens for product photography. It is very sharp, as other reviewers can attest. No complaints about the hardware. Where things fall apart is on the firmware / software side. Macro lenses have a very shallow depth of field. To get a good photo of a product (or any other unmoving object), one must use focus bracketing. For the uninitiated, this is where you take a series of photos at varying focal lengths. You then use software like Helicon Focus to do “focus stacking”, i.e. combine all the photos into a single one that is sharp from front to back. Sony makes excellent photography hardware generally but does not seem to get software. There are a number of cameras on the market now that will do focus bracketing in the camera. Some will even do focus stacking in the camera as well, like the Olympus OM-D E-M1. Others, like Nikon and Canon, allow third party software running on Mac or Windows to control the camera and perform focus bracketing that way, including a live view. But Sony, ah Sony. Not only does the A7 series not do focus bracketing, but Sony PREVENTS third party software from controlling the focal length. In other words, Sony will not do focus bracketing NOR will they let anybody else do it. From my perspective, it does not matter how sharp this lens is at any given depth of field -- it’s totally useless to me. I need to be able to take sharp photos from front to back.

Brilliant, sharp contrasty lens. AF is sometimes an issue
I was looking for a lens for my A6000 that can do great macro while also doubling up as a portrait lens. I will say this: I don't think I could have done better. The lens is INSANELY sharp. The details preserved are incredible. I've done 2:1 crops, and still been left with usable images. The bokeh is very pleasing. At close distances, even at f16, you get nicely blurred backgrounds, which just melts away. The colors pop. I'm pretty sure some Minolta magic was added to this lens, because the colors are very like some great Minoltas. Build quality is excellent. It feels very good in the hand, and the push-pull AF-MF changer is the best there ever can be. It is incredibly intuitive, and VERY useful for macro work. The focus hold and OSS ON/OFF switches are great too, and truly make this lens very user friendly. The ribbed focus ring is a pleasure to use, and is damped differently in AF or MF modes. MF mode has hard stops at CFD and infinity. It is technically focus by wire, not mechanically coupled, but it doesn't feel that way. I usually set my camera to DMF for macro work, then adjust focus by shifting between AF and MF seamlessly. Focus tends to be accurate, but speed is all over the place. With a good subject-background separation, there's no issues at all. But without that, there's a lot of hunting, especially at the macro range. Perversely, the focus limiter adds to this. You can limit focus so the lens only hunts in the macro range, but this slows down focus a lot. I've had quicker macro focus acquisition by setting the range to full. Yes, I know macro lenses don't have great AF anyway. But the fact that the focus limiter hurts, rather than helps, is troubling. There's a reasonable amount of focus breathing when doing macro work. I've grown to be able to predict it, and it doesn't bother me too much. All said, if you have an E-mount body and need to do macro work, you can't go wrong here, and not only because this is the only legitimate option.

The Perfect Upgrade from Kit Lens for a Beginner Photographer
I am a new learner on DSLR system and this 90mm prime is my first upgrade over kit lens. I am very happy with the performance of this lens. As you will see from images attached, the macro capabilities of this lens are phenomenal for a beginner photographer like me. This lens also serves equally well for portrait and landscape shots. Being a 90mm, you definitely cannot frame your portrait shots at close distance to your subject. For a decent bust level portrait, you will need a minimum distance of at least 2 metres from your subject. However, for Macro photography, you can take this lens as close as few centimetres to your subject and the resultant images are excellent in clarity and sharpness. The manual focus adjustment ring on the lens serves well to do quick fine-tuning for some of your shots. Overall, I am happy with this lens selection and the reason which prompted me to go for 90mm F2.8 instead of 50mm F1.8 and 85mm F1.8 is the dual utility of macro and portrait.

BUY THIS LENS, SERIOUSLY!!!!
First off I have to give props to the seller, EP you're freaking awesome. Package arrived earlier than expected and was in perfect condition. Now as for the lense... WHAT A BEAST!!!! Beautiful crisp clear scenery shots, amazing low light focal capability and it's an easy to use/figure out lens all around. I heard many people complaining about the auto focus noise, but I have not experienced it myself. I find it to be quite silent personally. It is however finicky at times and I found myself using manual focus more often than not. The lens itself has got kind of a fixed distance zoom (if that makes any sense), so be aware of that. Example: The picture of my motorcycle, to get it all in frame was taken from about 30' away at night is very poor almost black lighting. Note that when your shooting close up, the slightest twist on manual focus is the distance between miles in comparison (see pic of dog). Its a touchy lense but I feel its well worth the lessons it teaches you. A delicate touch will make all the difference. My advice: Buy this lens & thank me later..... DO IT!
