50175 60" x 45" Overhead Storage

This is my second Hyloft storage. After I installed 45" x 45" I was so pleased with it that I bought this smaller storage. Hyloft consists of 4 steel poles attached to the rafters, 2 poles that connect them to form a support to 2 gridded shelves. Since I have exposed beams I slightly modified how I attached the 4 steel poles to the rafters instead of bolting the to the bottom per instructions that worked with finished ceilings, I attached them to side of the rafters with a set of bolts I purchased separately. You can see my method in attached video. What is nice about the system is that it gives you a bit of freedom of how to position the poles, as you can see in the video they do not have to be precisely in the corners of the shelves. I have some over hang as it allowed me to position the shelves in a way that will be easy to access them from all directions for loading and unloading. It also gives you a lot of control of how high from the floor you want to hang the shelves. The system feels very secure although it flexes as you put things on and off. Very sturdy. It took a while to find the studs, but once that part is done, they are very easy to install. They claim to hold 250 lbs. of weight. I have a lot of junk loaded on them and they seem to be fine. They're great for getting junk off of your garage floor so that you can use your garage for what's is supposed to be used for.....parking a car.

A good ceiling storage rack. Not the strongest, but works well. Reasonably priced. Pretty easy to install.

We recently had a storage building built and installed two of these HyLoft 60-by-45 ceiling mount shelves. Installation instructions are not included in the box (you can download the PDF from HyLoft's website at [...]), although installation is relatively easy. One problem we ran into is that the holes for the anchor screws are wider than a typical ceiling stud so we would have had to mount the ceiling shelves along the two side walls to keep the shelves parallel to the studs. Fortunately we noticed this problem before the contractor finished so he installed some cross-joints to allow us to mount the ceiling shelves along the back wall perpendicular to the studs. Of course, the hard part is locating the studs, drilling the holes for the anchor screws, and and attaching the anchor posts to the ceiling. It's not terribly difficult, but give yourself plenty of time to make absolutely certain you've found the studs if you have a finished ceiling. The remainder of installation is a piece of cake. You might also keep in mind that these shelves are a lot larger than they initially seem. I mean these shelves are 5-feet wide, 3-3/4-feet deep, and between 2-1/2 to 3-1/3-feet tall. The ladder hooks are a great space saver as well, but in keep in mind you will need clear space at least the length of the ladder on one side of the shelf to remove the ladder.

I purchased two of these and it took me 2.5 hours to install the first one and maybe 30 minutes to install the second one. I have several issues with this product. Packaging was poor. Both packages were damaged in shipping and the product was also damaged slightly. I had to bend a few pieces back in shape. The second issue is the down rods were not manufactured very well, so much so, that it was not possible to easily align the parts because the base plate and the down rod were not assembled (welded) square. The rod was angled or was twisted. The third issue was the instructions. Overall they were fine but it was not really possible to easily asssemble using them because parts were mismatched. They (the instructions) make a large point that you MUST install the down rods parallel and square to the other down rods. This is nearly impossible because of the defects in the item. I had to persuade the items to go together with a rubber mallet. So, in the second install, I assembled it using my own method that accomodated the poor construction. Install one end of each support arm (down rods) first and then pre-assemble each arm of the support before you install the second down rod. Place the pre-assembled down rod up to the ceiling, mark the holes, drill and screw in the lag bolts. Of course make 100% certain you are in a joist. This can still be done with one person. Much easier. Hardware (Lag Bolts) was high quality. Shelf Holds my stuff. The lack of sides does concern me - You have to be sure to stablize everything on the shelf so it does not fall out and fall on someone.

I have owned 3 different Hyloft products since 2007. All have been fine products well worth the money. This storage unit is no exception. It is strong, easy to install, and has a nice finish. It claims to support up to 150 pounds. I have no intention of loading it up with anywhere close to this amount but I don't doubt it will hold this amount. If you want a good, affordable storage unit that is everything that it claims to be, then look no further than Hyloft.

I bought this to hold our A/V components at ceiling level with our projector. I had three main reasons, the first was to keep delicate expensive electronics not only out of the reach of playing kids but where balls and toys weren’t likely to hit them, that way they kids can be kids. Reason two is because we remodeled our basement family room after a pipe burst and flooded it and insurance doesn’t give you much for you electronics after a year or two. The third reason is the family room is open and clutter free with everything neatly out of view on this rack. It installed easily, is strong and durable. It has a slightly industrial look that fits in with A/V equipment and gives a real professional look. I’m very happy with this purchase and I definitely recommend it, I hope this helps you
