Does the plastic smell that some people complain about go away in time?

Mine reeked of plastic for the first few uses and there was an "off" taste in the rice, but after 5-10 uses (maybe less) it went away.  After the first 1-2 uses, I boiled water in it a few times and that seemed to help

What is this made of?

It is plastic but the Nordicware website apparently says it is the BPA free type good plastic. Also it does not heat up a lot even with over 5 minutes of continuous microwaving. Quite safe to handle even when relatively hot since the handle part does not heat up too much (it is a really good plastic since it conducts heat poorly so the entire pot is not hot even though the rice inside is steaming!) I hope that answers your question in relation to the consequences of the material.

I have no instructions.  How do I cook white rice - in basket with water in bottom but how long and what amount of rice and water - for how long?

I prepare rice often with my cooker. I measure the rice, rinse it well, put it in the cooker, add water  (1 part rice to 2 parts rice), secure lid on cooker and close vent. I cook it for 5 minutes on high and 15 minutes at 50%. Let it rest for 5 minutes. Fluff with fork. Perfect every time.

I am not sure how the lid is supposed to be set into the cover when in the microwave? Does the black vent thingy point down or do you flip it upwards?

The lid has several parts. On the outside top has a little round vent cover, when cooking close the holes. When finished cooking turn it so the steam can escape. To clean after cooking open the big lid, it has three parts and the inner piece you are talking about. put the black piece the way it fits, popping on to the top big round side down (it only fits one way). put the lid together. For cooking , Wash rice in strainer, put rice in cooker, 1 cup rice to 1.5 cups water, splash of olive oil, dash of salt, cook for 20 minutes, open vent for 1-2 minutes, open, stir with fork and enjoy. simple and delicious. it is a great cooker.
