It requires connection to the computer through the USB connection. Also, the display of the action and results is on the computer monitor. It actually replaces the number pad that is missing or broken in the computer keyboard.

Looking for a replacemant arrow key thing because two of my arrow keys on my laptop stop working and see if this thing makes a good replacement?

Yes, when you depress the NumLock key. I hadn't used this function before, and didn't know you could do this! I tried in on a Dell Windows XP laptop with Office 97 Excel and Word. I also tried it on an Asus Windows 8.1 laptop with Office 2013 Excel and Word. It worked in all instances.
