No buttons on the mic like the brand is moving to
My father is a lobster fisherman. When they use the mics, their hands are often wet and it kills the life of the vhf. Standard Horizon has started to replace this model with one that has several buttons on the mic. This is NOT conducive to lobster fishing. These mics will die very quickly and for the price of the radio, it just isn’t worth it. It was nice to find this older model on Amazon. I wish Standard Horizon would take note and continue to offer the older version!

Great basic fixed mount marine VHF
Installed this on the dash of my 24' Sea Pro walk around. The original radio was busted (16 years old). Installed with existing 8' Shakespeare antenna, and initially the radio wouldn't transmit. Found some severe corrosion in the antenna itself, and once I replaced that and wired it in, perfect! Got a strong radio check from my driveway to a Sea Tow station 5 miles away on 1 Watt. So, on the water set to 25W, you can expect some serious ranges (line of sight of course) while off shore. A lot of the features like DSC, NMEA GPS interface, etc are nice, but I don't have a GPS capable of taking advantage of those functions. For me and my boat, I only needed medium range VHF capability in case things go sideways while 10-15nm off shore fishing. The radio and mic have a good professional feel to them, I'm hoping this setup lasts many years. Really appreciate the WX mode, which enables you to listen to marine forecasts and updates when not in cell range. You should always have a good idea of wave heights and intervals before you go underway, but the conditions can change rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico.

Is DSC the new deal?
for 15 yrs I had a ray240 MODULAR radio system......NEVER EVER used the DCS, NOT EVEN SURE HOW IT REALLY WORKED. now even this cheap small radio has it, and again, will never hook it up or use it. DON'T WANT A STUPID COMPUTER SCREEN IN MY VEHICLES EITHER! Radio is compact and is not straight forward as I'd like. GET RID OF DSC and as a standard deal, give us up/down channel selector buttons on the mic, instead.

Not loud enough
Standard horizon is a very good brand of radio but this model is not loud enough. I put it in a Polaris RZR to use while trail riding. I had to install an external speaker to be able to hear it over the motor. If your going to use a radio in a loud environment then this is not the right one but it has worked flawlessly.
