PNW Components Coast Suspension Dropper Post – Internal Routing MTB Seatpost with Air Suspension – 100mm (27.2mm Diameter) and 120mm (30.9mm & 31.6mm diameters)

After back surgery and a hip replacement, this was recommended to me to make it easier to mount and dismount my gravel bike. Also, the little bit of shock absorption (adjustable) eases the pressure on my back.

This is legit. If you have a gravel/hardtail and are going to run a dropper, this is the only one to consider. It's not the best dropper or comfort seat post, but it does both and saves you if you get surprised. There is a con to this dropper as a dropper but it feeds into the pro. The con is that it has a lot of stiction (reluctance to move from the top of the movement - it takes more force to get it moving than it take to move it otherwise). The pro of this is that it gives you a great pedaling platform- it's solid most of the time. This also means that it takes more of an effort to put the saddle down than other posts, so you need to plan ahead. If you get surprised the suspension will save you from being punted, but if you're stuck with it up when things get rowdy. If you don't need the dropper, get a flexy seat post or something like a thudbuster. The angle the post is good if you're taking big hits at speed, but not for smoothing out the road. Since the dropper won't work if the post is flexy, it is stiff in directions little road bumps hit and body motions come from (backward and straight down). This is smooth out a one off pot hole or speed bump since you slow down when you hit that bump, but not a rough road because you're at a constant speed. You'd be better off with a good seat post clamp, some lines drawn on the post, and a few wraps of tape to use as a stopper for occasional use. Other notes: -I saw people complain that the saddle moves a bit. What I saw was that the saddle clamp rail channels are slightly wider than my saddle. If you don't spread your saddle rails out a touch, it won't clamp down right, giving you that sloppiness folks write about. If you have this problem, try re-seating the saddle. -This thing doesn't include cables or a lever, so add $20 and $40+ for each. You also need a shock pump $30 (or borrow one, I haven't needed to add more air). -Internally routed cables are a pain here because you need to move the entire housing with post. To insert the post into the frame, you have the housing tight against the dropper, so you need to move the entire housing around the BB bend, through the downtube, through the outlet to the bars. You need as much housing exposed on the bar side as you need to insert/remove then dropper, which can be alot. Maybe consider an external cable unit.

This was the only combination Dropper Suspension and Seat Post that I could find. The reviews indicated that it was a very high-quality unit but since it had both features combined, would not provide as much suspension as other seat suspension systems. The common claim I read was it would take the harshness out of the hardest of bumps. I found the unit very easy to install. The cable and trigger system seemed complicated but were not once you got into it. The dropper system works very well but I found the suspension system much better than expected. It provides noticeable absorption over all bumps and make the ride more comfortable w/o sacrificing road feel and handling. A great unit!

but I do not want to give the impression that it is the best thing since sliced bread. I installed this on a gravel bike. It is a very good dropper post, however the travel is a little on the short side (100mm for the 27.2mm). As a suspension seatpost, I think the good old Suntour SP12 NCX has better motion...it drops vertically, not on the travel path of the post. This provides a much more natural feeling while pedaling. I think the seat goes back, as well as down during the travel and that keeps the leg extension about the same. This kind of motion is also found on the Cane Creek Thudbuster and Redshift Shockstop. That said, it does provide travel, and it does take up the bumps while you are seated. I am a big guy (200 lbs) I have it pumped up to max pressure and it does bob a bit under normal pedaling stress. I think the Holy Grail of this kind of post would be a Cane Creek Thudbuster/Redshift Shockstop head, attached to a regular dropper post. (The Suntour SP12 spring mechanism is in the shaft of the post and would not work as part of a dropper design.) In summary, this is a qualified approval of the product until a better design comes along.

Okay this PNW Coast dropper is perfect for my hardtail. I bought the PNW $49 lever and a $10 jagwire dropper cable. Worked perfect. The suspension really smooths out sidewall bumps more than tires alone. The 120mm travel is plenty for me. It’s super smooth in actuation.

I loved this dropper post with the added feature of having some suspension. Just enough to take out the jolt of unexpected bumps. At 275 lbs it didn't hold up so I sent it back and got a second one. It too failed so I think the weight limit is lower than they say it is. I would say anyone over 250 should probably look elsewhere because when the suspension stops holding air pressure, the post drops and stays there. I can't say enough good things about PNW's wonderful customer support. None better. Top notch all the way. They worked with me and were quick to refund my payment since it didn't work out. Ten Stars for PNW support! The product my cost a bit more but the quality tech support makes it worth it.

I’ll go ahead with 5 stars on this. 4.5 might be more accurate. It does what it is designed to do and does it very well. I wanted a dropper post for my heavy ebike so I can drop it at stops and reach the ground without getting off the seat. My bike also doesn’t have rear suspension; not a huge deal but with this, I could add the dropper function land a suspension function for the same price as a dropper post. The suspension was a free bonus essentially. I’ve had it for a few days now. As others have stated, the air suspension is primarily for larger bumps, not for taking the little rough bumps. Air suspension is an odd idea to me, I would prefer spring but it seems really solid and if you dial in the right psi, it works well. The dropper function is smooth and the directions were simple for install. I do wish it would come up a little quicker. It rises perfectly but the last 10% takes a bit. I actually dialed it in to where my optimal max height is at that 90% level. So, it gives me a quick rise and I have the option to raise it a little further if I need.

I have droppers on most of my bikes but since I was putting together a rigid bike for bike packing I came across this option. It's both a dropper and a slight shock under the seat. Works pretty good. Took a few rides to get the air setup correctly in conjunction with pedaling height as it does move around and can make it difficult to get that static feel that you have with other dropper posts. It is nice when bumping down the trail with heavy panniers attached to the frame.

The suspension works very well and also the dropper. It just goes at the right speed. It makes a real difference for trails with a lot of roots. In addition, the suspension does not activate for nothing when pedaling. I recommend.

Cercavo un reggisella telescopico per la mia front, Visto che non é dotata di passaggio interno al tubo sella questo PNW Components Coast fa al caso mio, passaggio esterno subito sotto il collarino, ha una estensione di 120mm ed un diametro di 30.9, Qualità costruttiva ottima così come i materiali. Ha un'ottima rigidità anche in salita, veramente granitico non si muove di un millimetro a meno che non prendiate buche enormi, vi ammortizza un pochino ma senza esagerare, Resta il fatto che restituisce un'ottimo feeling. Vi dà la possibilità di decidere la pressione interna della cartuccia tramite una pompa alta pressione la stessa delle forcelle in modo da calibrarlo in base al vostro peso, io l'ho lasciato come arrivato e mi trovo benissimo. Per ultimo do 4 stelle perché in dotazione non c'è nulla a parte lui quindi dovete acquistare guaina filo e leva di azionamento a parte.

i am very happy with the post. Initially i thought it was losing pressure but it was my fault as every time i pumped it to 300psi then when i unscrewed the pump i lost about half of that. Once i figured out how to pump it correctly the pressure holds.
