Can I just plug this into mains and only use it for charging?

For anyone confused by all the above , I have one of these and heres the definitive answer - yes you can just use it as a charger if you only plug into the mains, butg if you also plug it into your PC - 1. All the blue connections can be used for connecting something that requires exchanging data with your PC e.g. a memory stick. They CAN also all be used to charge phones or any other USB connectable equipment. 2. The red connection is dedicated specifically for charging only and cannot be used to make a data connection. It is also a higher wattage and "smart" so will "fast charge" your phone if your mobile supports that. Ive had mine for a few years now and its still going strong with zero issues (touch wood :-))

When powered down, does it remember which ones are on which ones are off?

Yes it does, I disconnected it from the mains power and the PC, I left all my storage devises connected and then reconnected the hub to my PC and it did remember, I hope this helps.
