I love writing and I wanted to explore some ways to spice up birthday cards , letters, and signs around the house. This book is perfect for that, It goes over technique, the different strokes to use, and teaches two completely different styles in both upper and lower case. I love how much space there is for practicing every single letter. There are several practice pages for lower and upper case in two complete styles:: Basic Brush Alphabet and Basic Monoline Alphabet. Then, there are several practice pages for common word in both styless. Lots of pages to practice and write. There is a lot more to do to get started right away. There is also a great overview of connections for connecting the letters of different styles, and examples of the serif alphabet (upper and lower case) and san serif alphabet (upper and lower case). There are practice pages for a variety of "Flourishes and Swashes" , wreaths, doodles, and then it illustrates how to compose all the elements together using variations, mixing and matching, and designing. Every section has a place for you to practice yourself. The different styles, the number of practicing pages, and the design section make this an incredible book for starters. I am so glad I purchased it! It is more hands on and "putting the pen to paper" practice sheets than other books similar to it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

I have an 11 year old daughter who has fallen in love with fancy lettering. She has been looking online and creating new things (like monograms) and I thought this was a good way to foster her artistic focus. This is a nice paperback book with strong binding and a matte cover. The book includes an introduction to lettering terms, basic strokes, practice pages, and design elements. She quickly filled the book and has been printing replacement sheets off the internet. Font is sized to be easy to read and she has been able to develop a better approach to her lettering. The book is educational without talking down or over the child. I think an adult could use it with no issues.

This is a great beginner book for Modern calligraphy and lettering. I use tracing paper over the workbook practice pages to keep from writing in the book. I've learned a lot so far. Nice alphabets in this book. Wish there was more practice for connecting letters to make words...

This is a cool introductory book for calligraphy practice

This is great! I have gotten through about half the book and it has definitely helped get the style down. Most important is just repetition and writing a lot to get your personal style pin pointed.

Book contents seem ok but the book itself came damaged? Molded or dirty had to order a replacement

I just ordered this book this morning, and I'll start off by saying it was delivered only 3 hours after I ordered it (highly impressed, Amazon!!). Loving the same-day delivery option! About the book itself... it's beautiful! I flipped through each page and there's a lot of great information here for beginners. It goes into detail about body posture, hand positioning, and the different types of tools you can use. There are a LOT of practice pages, and instructions for how to download free printable versions of them for when you run out of room. There are practice pages for both brush pens (varying line thickness) and regular pens (consistent line thickness). You start by practicing the lower and upper cases of each letter, then go into connecting them to create words, and then even has some extra little symbols for adding flavor to your projects. The only downside for my purchase is that I ordered the paperback version, and I wish I would have gotten the spiral version. The paperback obviously creates raised curves in the pages toward the spine, and you'll want a totally flat surface while practicing lettering. Unfortunately, this just isn't something I had thought to consider when buying it, but it will not deter me from using it! I'm so happy I chose to order this book among SO many other options out there, and can't wait to get started!

Love the book, so much to practice.

Great book for learning to do calligraphy! It includes a variety of different fonts and letterings, easy step by steps, loads and loads of space to practice. Starts off with basic brush strokes, then basic letters, then moves onto fancier letters, joining the letters, practicing words, and adding decoration. Great book for any beginner or just to practice, and it's a great price!
