Speedball Oblique Pen Set - 1 Penholder w/ 4 Nibs, 2 Pen Points

Great nibs and great holder. The oblique is removable for a good clean, however the nib will slide around the holder and will need readjusted while writing. For a student set it's very nice. The nibs have great flex which grants variable line weight, and work great with Indian and Acrylic inks. I may have accidentally bent one of the tines but it went back with no detectable damage, visually or through use. The wide rest is really nice to hold and the oblique writes wonderfully

This is a quality product. All stencils were wrapped individually in plastic bags and they even came of the carrying case.

First of all, I need to say that if you are a beginner, you WILL struggle with this set. You could use the oblique holder no problem, but the nibs are not meant for beginners. That being said, this is my absolute favorite set. the 101 nibs are my most used nib (also love the Leonardt EF), and I can't get enough of them. That being said, the first time I ever tried them I really struggled (as do most beginners). If the nib is scratching the page and ink is splattering everywhere, that is not the nibs fault, but you just don't have the technique down well enough to be using these. I know some people prefer for expensive holders, but this oblique pen works just fine for me, and I saw the expensive holders for the nibs that don't fit in standard holders. For the nibs, I definitely use the 101 the most. It creates think downstrokes and very thin hairlines. The other nib (I believe its a 103) I don't use as often, but it certainly allows you to create tiny writing (I just don't have as much of a need for). As any experienced user will know, make sure to clean the nibs off well for oils. If you have not used nibs before, you will NEED to cleans the nibs off well before. I typically will spend about 2 minutes straight rubbing the nib with acetone using a q-tip (lightly so fibers don't get caught).

I have no prior experience with pointed pen scripts, but right out of the package I was getting really dynamic thin/thick lines. The oblique pen really set the nib at the perfect angle for this type of calligraphy. There are a few drawbacks though: I wish we could have some ability to adjust the angles of the holder. I'm actually left-handed and am really flexible with changing my hand positions to fit my needs, but it would be great to write "normally" and have the pen do all the adjusting. Another issue is with the quality of the nibs. There's a set of 4 in one type and a set of 2 in the other. I had 1 nib from each set that did not move as smoothly over the paper. I could definitely feel a significant snag while writing but the other nibs worked fine. Overall, this is the perfect beginner set for pointed scripts.

This pen is so much fun to play with. It takes a bit of time to get it going and to get the coating off of the nib, but once it gets going, it is so satisfying!!!

I'm using the nibs with my own oblique holder and they work very well. The 101 is extremely nice but takes a very light touch. The 103 is a bit of a challenge, at least with all the paper I tried it with using my typical black ink. However the 103 did well with thinned watercolors which I brushed into the nib. It requires an "extremely" light touch, so much so that it may be difficult to know if it's even touching the paper. Just a slight variation of touch can cause the tip to split, skip, and spatter. However, with a perfect touch, the stroke is likely the finest that can be achieved with any nib.

Novice calligraphy enthusiast here :) I have quite a few standard dip pen holders and was curious to try out the oblique pen holder, I like it so far. Sure, it isn't the greatest one out there, but it's great for learning how to use an oblique pen holder before investing more money in an adjustable one.

Earlier Review: Useless! Can barely write with it and it gives me chicken skin! This pen alone will discourage anyone interested in calligraphy! Updated Review: I changed my rating from 0 to 3 stars. One nib was defective and I rated the product from my bad experience with that one flawed nib (I was extremely annoyed). I tried two other nibs and it wrote better. I agree that this is a good beginners pen set. I would have given it a 4 star but for that faulty nib.

Write well but feels so light. Good for practicing calligraphy.
