Self-Publisher's Legal Handbook, Second Edition: Updated Guide to Protecting Your Rights and Wallet Kindle Edition

While researching the legal ramifications of self-publishing several months ago, I contacted Helen Sedwick to obtain a copy of her original edition of the “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook”. I am a new author with no experience in the world of either traditional publishing or self-publishing, and I had no idea where to begin. I was lucky enough to be provided with a pre-launch copy of this updated and expanded version of the Handbook for review and have found the “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” to be an indispensable reference tool and guide. With the help of Ms. Sedwick’s Handbook I am now about half way through setting up my own self-publishing business.The “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” is clear and easy to understand, uncluttered by “legalese”, and I would highly recommend it to any author who is interested in self-publishing. The Handbook provides you with all of the basic facts for every aspect of self-publishing as well as step-by-step instructions and additional important references. Ms. Sedwick is direct and honest about the risks and potential dangers of self-publishing without being “foreboding” or negative. She points out the pitfalls, but does not give you the impression that the whole process would be “too much” for an inexperienced person to handle. That was and is a big plus for me. It is much easier to absorb information and learn something new if you are presumed intelligent. And there is a lot to learn. I will continue to use the “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” in taking all of the steps necessary to finish setting up my business and reach my goal of becoming a self-published author.If you are looking for a valuable self-publishing guide and legal reference tool, a resource to help you make informed decisions about how to set up your own self-publishing business, this book would make a great addition to your library.S. Everything about this book is excellent. While I originally purchased it for some information and advise on pen names and writing about real live people, which has become a big concern for me, and my first little book I am writing, I ended up reading every word in the entire book. She has given me a blueprint to follow for my entire journey and I am paying close attention to each step. She gives easy to follow instruction and advise on each step you need to be aware of if you are new to the writing world. She has put so much information in the book and I am following her advise on it all and just ordered my first book that she referenced regarding resources.It is so well written and such an easy read that I could not get enough and have re-read many sections. I fell in love with the entire book as it is beautiful to look at. The size of the book makes for a good read as the width let's the page you just turned, fall nicely to the side as to be out of the way. The design inside is gorgeous and easy on the eyes for both content and looks. The entire book, it's technical information and the artistry of the look you get to see is almost magical. Like I said, I fell in love and I thank the author for her expertise, advise and vision. Being a newbie, I am smitten.

Helen is an amazing writer when it comes to law. She makes it so easy to understand I love the way she has written the three sections beyond the Appendix. She takes a contract and goes over it line by line. Nice! She explains it so well that it makes me feel like a lawyer! That's not to say that I am. She makes it clear that for anything beyond her book, get a lawyer. Those options though are usually for sure fire bestsellers rather than self-publishing. She makes sure to add that into the title so you understand, this is for self-publishing only. She walks you through the steps on how to start your own publishing business and then write as an author. I'll be honest, as a first time author, I feel awkward telling anyone that I am writing because doesn't everyone? But as I read her book I was very surprised and quite honestly, delighted, to find that I can really do this! Suddenly, words began pouring onto the page because it's like there is this glimmer of hope. I am about to establish my own and it is all thanks to her. If I have no other writing book, this is the one I would want to keep and refer back to. NO kidding. Now what she lacks are the worksheets to do it yourself. That is not a liability that she probably wants to risk. Instead, she recommends another book for that. So keep in mind if you're looking for forms or worksheets, this is not the book you're looking for but I would highly recommend you buy anyway.Thank you, Helen for giving me courage to start my own business and be an author.

I read this book in about a day. Everything is laid out clearly and points to exactly where to turn to do further research. Every self-publisher needs this as a reference tool. I would recommend reading this right after your manuscript is complete so that you can map out the life of your book.

I read the 1st edition of this book a few years ago and found it extremely helpful in my efforts to self-publish my first book. At that time, I happily gave it 5 stars. When I discovered the 2nd edition was published, I honestly didn't think there was any way to improve the original. But I was wrong! This 2nd edition is even better.If you haven't read either version, just get the 2nd edition and that will be all you need in my opinion.The 2nd edition does a great job of explaining the critical topics that indie authors need to know before publishing their book, such as US copyright laws, setting up a legal entity for your author business, options for distributing and marketing your book, record-keeping info, basic tax requirements, etc. In a nutshell, this book covers the business side of book writing that most newbie authors are not aware of. That is why I say this book is a must-read for indie authors. Get this book. You won't be disappointed!

I am a Brit so some of the stuff written by an American lawyer has to be used as an indicative clue.

This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone considering the self-publishing route.Valuable information, hints and tips - don't publish until you've read it.

Even with a Law Degree the info was invaluable.
