You do have to break the sticks in half. If you try to burn a whole stick, you will get ash on wherever you place the burner. It's too small to burn a whole stick because the angle of the hole is diagonal instead of verticle. Half a stick of Japanese incense is more than enough anyway because the sticks are all fragrance instead of half smoke like Indian incense with the bamboo or wood center. Personally, I prefer the Morning Star incense to the other Japanese incense I have tried, especially the pine, cinnamon and fig. Should you also buy those, I think you will like them too.You may see my reviews on great Indian incenses as well. I prefer the Indian incense for the large rooms in the house because of the sheer volume. On special occasions, I will burn frankincense resin on charcoal. The latter is the most beautiful but you have to know what you are doing, eg you have to cut a soda can and use the bottom of the can to raise the frankincense above the charcoal as to not burn/scorch the resin.I love this buner and the Japanese incense for the bedroom. It is the lightest of all of the incense types. The holder is very pretty and you really can't go wrong.

Small and beautiful, the hole in it is for the larger and shorter kinds of incense. But to make it useful for the slender long Japanese incense sticks, you can just drop a drop of warm wax on the hole and adjust it to your needs with a toothpick. It's a lovely piece.The diameter of this holder is about 10 centimeters.
