Mary Tylor Naturals Pure Shea Butter 1 lb Raw, Unrefined, Ivory From Ghana Africa — Great for Hair, Skin and all your DIY Projects

I bought this (and natural cocoa butter and a lot of other non solid oils) to make body butter. To successfully make body butter you need a ratio of one solid to one liquid (solid being Shea or cocoa butter or some other hard oil). You melt the Shea butter in the microwave (I melted cocoa butter then melted this Shea butter into it) then mix your other oils and any scents you want (I love the smell of coffee so I use pura d’or coffee oil - smells amazing with the cocoa butter) and mix in a mixer for about 10 mins. Refrigerate for about 15 take out and do another 10 mins. Keep repeating until the mixture starts to solidify and get a gravy like consistency. If you want to get rid of the smoky smell (it’s not noticeable until you actually use the body butter on your skin and it’s an after scent that many people might not notice and goes away in about an hour - in my research all raw Shea butter has this I think it’s how it’s processed) you need to put the mixture in your refrigerator for about 4 weeks - the other oils will absorb it and it’s gone. I couldn’t wait that long and my mixer isn’t that big so I used about 1 1/2 cups of the mixture and stored the rest (when you whip it its best to leave lots of room in the mixer as it gets about 3 times the amount with whipping). To finish just whip with a wire whip 20 - 30 mins then refrigerate 4 or 5 times until desired consistency. I store my finished result in an empty coconut oil container.

I was having issues with my skin- purchased this Shea butter, it was imperative I got something authentic! This is it! This is my go to shea butter- I do mix it with jojoba oil- because real shea has a bit of a smoky smell, which I do not like. It’s absorbent, not to greasy but I like it greasy. Definitely purchase this one!

This is the first time I purchased raw shea butter - based on some reading, I was expecting the product to be hard (as firm as parmesan cheese) with a pleasant nutty scent. What I received was a package of solid (not liquid) yet soft shea butter (slightly thicker than gritty lard) that smelled strongly of sweaty goat/farm animal. To call it nutty would be generous. To be honest, I am still unsure if this is the way it is supposed to be or if something is off about this. Because I was new to raw shea butter, I assumed it was "normal" and hoped that mixing it with other oils would eliminate the strong scent, as much of my readings indicated it would. I proceeded to mix 1 cup of shea butter with 1 cup of coconut /jojoba oil, then added 30 drops of lemongrass essential oil (a bit overkill ). Unfortunately, cutting it did NOTHING to mitigate the musky goat scent. Because I went through the cost/time/effort to make this, I have been using it after showers - sparingly - in hopes that this concoction would perform so well I would overlook the stink.... which DOES dissipate after about an hour. I put on an old tshirt and sweats for an hour or so before getting into work or dress clothes - otherwise, that smell will cling to my clothes and stay with me all day. I'll likely try a different brand of Raw Shea butter and throw this one out since I already opened the package and used some, and its a couple months beyond the return date. I should have returned it right after smelling it but was hopeful that mixing it with other oils would eliminate the strong scent!! If Mary Tylor Naturals wants to reimburse me, I'd be happy to update this review in support of good customer service. But for now, it gets a 1 for the heavy musky goal aroma.

i was skeptical when I received this product due to the smell, which some have described as earthy. That's a good description. But as the company says, the smell disapates once applied. I love the product and will buy it again. My duaghter had a rash on her neck earlier today. She asked if I could apply the shea butter, which surprised me. She complained about the smell but it soothed her rash. My GF also doesn't love the smell but so far that has been inconsequential. What matters to me is: purity, safety, and effectiveness. It checks those boxes for me. I no longer notice the smell.

I have used this brand of shea butter for years. It worked great on my psoriasis. This latest order has a horrible smell. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! It is unusable! Surely someone at the Mary Tylor organization is aware that something is wrong with this batch. DO NOT ORDER THIS product.

The smell is strong and not good, I got used to it my family doesn’t love it and still calls it the stinky lotion. It helps stretch marks go away and works as a sun screen which I found out first hand by mistake before I read about it. I got a sunburn everywhere but where I had the lotion (or clothing). Does stain clothing a little if you put clothing over the lotion too soon.

My absolute favorite shea butter. Quality& fairly priced. The smell and texture are amazing. I've used to to make cold processed soap, deodorant, lotion bars, salve and more. I will never buy another brand again. IMHO nothing else is as good as this one. Big fan here!
