Sigma Mount Converter MC-21 (Canon EF to L Mount)

OVERVIEW I recently got the Panasonic S5 but the L mount lenses are very expensive, large, and overall impractical to me. I have a lot of EF mount glass for my 5DIV and C200 so I went looking for a way to minimize having to buy new lenses and to use my existing EF glass. This adapter turned out to be the perfect solution. THE GOOD - Quality - The adapter seems high quality, the base plate mount is a nice touch and helped me move the tripod adapter plate forward which makes balancing it on a gimbal easier. - AF - Of course everyone is complaining about AF. You do lose continuous AF with this adapter when using EF lenses even if you use a Sigma lens. But one shot AF still works perfectly fine. I mainly got the S5 for video and I use MF when shooting video so I really don't care about the AF. For photography one shot is fine with me for those times I need photography as well. If you really need continuous AF then this is not the adaptor for you. - Cost Savings - If you already have an investment in EF glass, this adapter could save you thousands, it also keeps you from buying lenses in a system that seems very limited. Only members of the L mount alliance use L mount lenses which are very expensive with limited selection; vs. EF which has the largest lens ecosystem available. THE BAD - Manual Focus - When manually focusing, not all lenses seem to report to the Panasonic body that the MF wheel has been turned; this means that if you have it set to auto zoom when manually focusing it does not work. The 24mm F2.8 Canon EF lens works perfectly, whereas the 24-105mm F4 Canon EF lens does not work. The Sigma 50mm F1.8 also works properly. Fortunately on the S5 you can just press the magnification button so it is not that big of a deal. - Continuous AF - As I previously mentioned, if your work requires continuous AF, then you will need to get native glass, Continuous AF does not work with this adapter. CONCLUSION For my specific uses, this adapter is perfect, this adapter keeps me from having to buy any L mount lenses and lets me use my significant investment in EF glass. If I ever need continuous AF I will use my 5DIV, the 20-60mm kit lens, or I will finally buy an L mount lens. But at least for the moment, I don't foresee ever needing it. Thanks to this adapter my new gimbal setup is the Canon EF 24mm F2.8, the Panasonic S5, and this adapter. It balances perfectly on the Ronin S and is actually lighter than my GH5 setup.

I use this for my old EF lenses and my Lumix S5IIX. The autofocus works great with no problems. People say it works better than the native lenses. I honestly don't know, but it works great. I use it for my USM IS 50mm 1.4 L. I have no complaints; it's honestly the best converter you can get.

As others have noted this adapter leaves some things to be desired, in fact a number of things... Very basic things that you could really expect with a $250 adapter made by a world leader in lens technology with a number of break out hits under their belt. Things like auto focus, continuous auto focus, or maybe neither and a price about $100 cheaper? I'm personally using this adapter with a Panasonic S1 a Sigma 24-105mm F4, 24-70mm f2.8 and Canon 200mm F2.8 L. Strangely they all function differently when it comes to focus with the 200mm being the most accurate, the 24-105 being the least, and the 24-70 somewhere in between. Of all of them though I would say the same thing: the auto focus is very bad. In general it seems to latch on to a point just beyond what you're actually aiming at and if you rock back just slightly on your feet the point that was supposed to be in focus will come into focus. For a photographer this adapter would be an utter nightmare for single auto focus, especially with a fast subject like kids, animals, cars, birds, etc. You will not get the shot unless you're shooting something slow, controlled and willing to sit around and wait 20-30 seconds while you screw with focus. For video shooters this adapter does the job its supposed to do: allow you to clamp an EF lens on a L mount body and control aperture. Since a lot of videos shooters will likely be using manual focus, a focus puller, or maybe even setting focus and letting it stay put you might not find the quirks of the adapter as annoying. I tried out a Canon 50mm f1.4 and a 100 mm f2.0 and all the lenses were aperture controlled properly by the adapter. Still, as I said before none of the single auto focus performance was what I'd call trustworthy. Most people, myself included, can probably pull focus with by hand faster and more accurately than the damned S-AF mode. People have talked about firmware and USB ports and whatnot, but I'm imagining you could use a Sigma lens dock to update firmware the same way you do with their lenses so while I'm sure they COULD improve things I'm also not holding my breath they WILL. In all likelihood Viltrox or Metabones, Fotodiox or some other adapter company will cook up something $150-200 more expensive that works and has approximate C-AF and good S-AF... or someone will come up with a simple aperture control adapter for $150. Either one would be a great buy over this lukewarm middle of the road option that promises very little and still doesn't manage to deliver on any of it. So is this worth buying? Well since it's the only game in town as of mid 2019 and you're a cheap SOB looking to use their Canon lenses on a new body I'd say unfortunately yes it will be worth buying. If there was another option in town, or a mark 2 or something that could deliver on even a fraction of the AF potential of the L mount camera bodies then by god I'd recommend that hands down over this thing. If fast and sure auto focus is essential to you just buy the 24-105 F4 or some other cheap native L mount lens (an oxymoron I know). If you're just looking to use an EF lens on an L body to save some money and don't mind pulling focus entirely manually then go for it. It's the only choice anyhow.

Su uso es práctico y muy sencillo. Lo he usado para fotos, video y en ambas me ha funcionado de maravilla. El enfoque automático sirve en ambosj modos, sea foto o vídeo sin ningún problema. Lo he usado en una S5 II X y todo correcto, recomendando si necesitas un convertidor. Al principio tenía dudas porque incluso en la página web de Sigma decían que el AF no funcionaba cuando se graban vídeo pero todo lo contrario, no tiene el mismo nivel que un lente propio del sistema L pero funciona muy bien para momentos en los que necesites un autofocus correcto. Lo usé con un Sigma ART DC 18-35mm f/1.8 y un Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4 y funciona correctamente en todos los modos. No lo he usado con lentes Canon EF pero cuando tenga la oportunidad lo usaré para ver si funcionamiento en todos los modos.

I bought the S1 when it first came out and got this adapter with it. This was 2.5 years ago. I did not like the adapter so i returned it. I just got the S5 which I love, and I guess my expectations were that there would be some FW revisions or something that would make this adapter better. Well.....it hasn't improved. This adapter is very slow. I really have no issues with depth from defocus technology. In fact, I think the S5/S1 AF is very snappy (for photo), yet with this adapter it passes through the main subject to calculate if that main subject was accurate, and then it takes the photo. All-in-all you may be waiting approximately 2 seconds before your shutter releases. This is turtle speed. Also, all the other reviews cover this, but continuous focus does not work with this adapter. This adapter works if you or your subject do not mind waiting for the picture to take, and if you don't plan on using continuous focus. Other than that, it works. I really do desire to sit and wait to acquire focus before the shutter releasing. Therefore, this is not for me. I'd rather spend all the money buying L mount lenses that meet my needs. I'll be returning this item

Purchase this, so I could use my APC lenses. It works as advertised. I have no complaints.

Excelente convertidor para mi montura L, ahora utilizo mis lentes EF de Canon a Lumix S5ii, el Auto Focus funciona magistral.

The Sigma MC21 EF - L Lens converter works perfectly with my Panasonic S5ii camera. It has allowed me to adapt my Canon lens to the Panasonic body and get single shot autofocus; aperture control - and benefit from the camera bodies excellent stabilisation. There is an indicator LED on the adaptor that lights up to tell you things are well; the one time it didn't go green power cycling the camera resolved it. The adaptor has a tripod thread; which works nicely with smaller lenses - like a 50mm f1.2 L - but with longer lenses it still feels better to use the lens' own shoe. If you haven't used some of the canon RF bodies the adaptor may change your workflow; as swapping lenses does require you to power the camera off and on again as you change. This soon becomes second nature; and the led not going green is a hint you made a mistake. It allows me to shoot with all my EF lenses on the S5ii giving me a lot of opportunity without spending thousands on a new set of lenses. I you shoot sports or moving video you will miss servo autofocus but that seems to be the only downside.

Funcionando a la perfección en AFC con una Panasonic S5ii y objetivos EF

Je l'utilise pour monter sur mon LUMIX S1 un TAMRON SP 15-30 G1, et ça fonctionne plutôt bien au niveau de l'autofocus, mais j'y perds la stabilisation du Tamron tout en conservant bien sûr celle du boîtier, et j'y perds aussi l'AF-C tout en conservant l'AF-S... L'ensemble est gros, lourd, imposant, mais c'est un monstre à produire de très belles images. De plus, le MC-21 me permettra d'étoffer mon parc d'optiques avec des objectifs CANON à l'avenir, ou d'autres marques en montures CANON : SIGMA ART, TAMRON, etc. Seule surprise, aucune petite lumière verte (ni rouge d'ailleurs) ne s'allume sur la bague bien qu'elle devrait le faire pour confirmer la compatibilité qui est pourtant réelle mais partielle.
