About 8 feet. I use mine with an extension cord since the socket is a distance away from the table.

Does this item come with an "Australian" plug by chance?

No it doesn't. You'll need to get an adapter for NZ or Australian plugs.

Can you feel the heating wire in this pad with just a sheet over it?

No, I have never felt the wires. The warmer heats up quickly and can be time and temperature controlled.

Does it have an on/off button on the controller or do you need to unplug it to turn it off?

It has a timer button to switch on to a set time. If you need to turn it off before the time is up you hold the time button for a few secounds and it switches off.
