Do these require batteries?

Yes they will. 2 x AAA. I have not received mine yet. But all trackmaster trains with spikey wheels on them require batteries. Hope this helps

Will these trains work on the wooden thomas train tracks?

Yes they do. You can also purchase pieces to connect track master to wooden tracks.
