Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man 27-28; Daredevil 158-161, 163-172 Review: Daredevil vol 1 - The frank miller run on daredevil is the definitive run & the only daredevil to read Review: So it begins.... - Obviously, if you're reading this, you know who Frank Miller is and why his run is so iconic. Volume 1 includes his first DD art, which was actually in the mediocre Peter Parker the Spec Spider-Man. It's staggering, though, to see the art instantly change when he jumps into the main Daredevil title and has his pencils inked by Klaus Janson. Really makes you appreciate Janson's contribution. Storywise, most of the comics here are not written by Miller. They're also not as good as the stories in volumes 2 and 3. However, this is worth getting for the first appearance of Elektra and a terrific story against Gladiator, who becomes a lot more important during Bendis' run. So, this volume is great, but it's not really "essential" to understanding Miller's run on the series.

The Man Without Fear
Great collection. Frank Miller's writing and artwork definitely still holds up today. Only complaint is that the issues that predate Miller's tenure as writer do seem dated and sometimes ridiculous. (Daredevil shouldn't be in a public hospital with a bandage wrapped around his mask.) There not all bad though, and Miller's issues alone makes this a must have for any daredevil fan.

The start of Frank Miller's legendary run
Before Frank Miller pays his dues for "Wolverine" miniseries, "Daredevil: Born Again" story arc & "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel, he was an unknown artist who ends up saving Daredevil from being cancel by leading him into a whole new direction. This is Volume 1 of Frank Miller's stories of Daredevil which starts with "Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #27-28" where Daredevil was helping a blind Spider-Man. Then in "Daredevil #158-161 &163-164", it features the "Marked for Death" storyline where Black Widow bounces back into Daredevil's life as he takes on Deathstalker, Bullseye, & even go toe-to-toe with the Incredible Hulk. Then Daredevil told his trusted ally Ben Urich his secret identity & his origin story. Then in "Daredevil #165", Daredevil tangles with Doctor Octopus while telling Black Widow that he's in love with Heather Glenn which led to Black Widow leaving New York heartbroken. In "Daredevil #166", Matt Murdock's best friend & partner Foggy Nelson was getting married and in "Daredevil #167", Daredevil went up against the Mauler. Then in "Daredevil #168-169," Daredevil run into his old college sweetheart Elektra who is now a mercenary & once again battle Bullseye. In "Daredevil #170-172", it features the "Gang's War" storyline where Daredevil first goes toe-to-toe with the Kingpin. If you love Ann Nocerti's legendary run of "Daredevil", then you're going to love Frank Miller's legendary run because he's a genius. His run made him a star artist and these Daredevil stories prove it.

Miller starts his brilliant run
By the late 1970s Marvel Comics DAREDEVIL was struggling to find an audience and it was in serious danger of cancellation. Frank Miller had packed his bags from Vermont and decided to try his hand in the comics field then housed in New York City— portfolio in hand his reception was far from welcoming and he was told to pack up return to Vermont and pump gas for a living. Miller persevered and kept improving his work— he had a serious love of Film Noir and Crime Comics both of which had long since disappeared from the American landscape, and finally he was given a shot at penciling the failing DAREDEVIL book since it was likely to be cancelled soon. From his first issue, collaborating with a writer he brought that Film Noir to to the art style, so much so that when he and the writer disagreed about story direction the editor let the writer go and gave Miller the writing duties too- and in short order he turned the book into the crime noir comic he wanted to do.

A Labor of Love
Its not bad. But it's not great. More so a read for people that are Frank Miller or Daredevil fans wanting to read up on the roots + all before it gets cooking.
