Better than the original.
Bought to accompany a Commodore 64 Ultimate. Works perfectly, and feels better than the Atari original. I really like how the stick unscrews for portability.

Just like the original
These were never premium joysticks… even back in the day. Made to satisfy the home consumer this stick isn’t exactly as tough as nails, but it’s certainly tough enough for your living room. Has that original “soft touch” when the switches close. Allows for more finesse than the heavy duty arcade sticks. Lightweight, it has to be held by the other hand to keep it stable during use. Perfect for the kiddos or the kid in us.

Works and has a good feel. Also compatible with Commodore 64.
I bought these for my Commodore 64 and they work great. The action is way better than the original worn out joysticks I had. No complaints at all.

Similar to original Atari joystick, left & right-handed buttons. Stick tends to unscrew itself.
Nice joystick, very similar to the original Atari joystick (CX-40?) except this one has left & right buttons for alternate left and right-handed use. The only reason I deducted one star is that the shaft of the joystick has a tendency to unscrew from the internals while playing games and periodically I have to screw it back in for fear of causing malfunction or damage to the joystick.

Much better than the original Atari joysticks but with the same authentic feel
This came with the Retron 77 console and after using this Hyperkin Trooper joystick controller to play Atari 2600 games I can't go back to using the original controllers. What makes this controller great is that it is just like the original joystick in every way except... 1) It's more comfortable with the rear edges cut out so they don't dig into the palms of your hands. 2) It has a button for left handed players. 3) The responsiveness is much better than the original Atari spring based joysticks. 4) It feels smoother than original internal plastic rocker Atari joysticks that replaced the spring based controllers. 5) The cord is longer than the original Atari joystick controller. Those first original internal spring joysticks tended to break and were later replaced with an internal plastic rocker design which was more durable but had a less tactful and clunky feeling. This Trooper controller by Hyperkin seems to capture the perfect balance of the smoothness of the original internal spring joystick controller with a more tactful precision than the original replacement that Atari used. This is the best Atari style joystick design I've tried so far and after using it for a month any other Atari style controller I try feels inferior in comparison. The main thing going for the internal plastic rocker design was that it was extremely durable. I'm hoping this Trooper controller also has similar durability of the original Atari brand replacement joysticks which are still working. It would be nice if Hyperkin would also release a set of their own paddle controllers.

Garbage (Literally)
This controller looked and worked great but it only worked for less than a month. I wound up tossing it in the trash because it became nothing more than a doorstop. The joystick was the issue. It stopped working in one direction. I should have listened to the other review that mentioned the joystick breaking. Buyer beware.

Excellent Atari Joystick
So I use this to game with my Atari 800 XL Computer system. For the price this is an excellent value and really breathes life into my retro system by providing nice accurate input that in itself can make or break these older games. the joystick as a 10ft. cord and a nice weighted feel. Also, the corners have an indentation which makes them more comfortable to hold in your hands. The joystick has two fire buttons for ambidextrous use, any Atari system will only recognize them as one button. If you are into retro Atari gaming, this joystick will really breath new life into your older system. Although serious retro gamers will most likely spend much more on professionally restored or modded joysticks, again, for the price this a great product which works with the Retron77 Emulator and real Atari hardware, Atari 2600, Atari 400, 800, 800XL and XE systems.

the best quality Atari/Commodore retro controller on Amazon
I have purchased several other retro atari style game controllers for my Commodore 64, but all have been of poor quality. They invariable break within the first hour of use - the poor quality controllers would only last a decent amount of time if immediately taken apart and then reinforced with epoxy. THIS controller is different! The Hyperkin controller feels like a quality made controller. It is heavy and seems well made. The controller does feel like it has a lot of play in the stick a bit of a mushy feeling that is somewhat annoying, I haven't taken it apart yet, but I suspect that it doesn't have the "clicky" switches like some of the quality after market controllers of the 1980's and 1990's. The dual buttons are a nice touch that allow it to be used left-handed. Overall, I'm not worried about this controller breaking in the first few minutes or hours of play like every other new retro Atari controller on the market today.

I can confirm these work PERFECTLY for the retro systems that use a 9 pin Atari style joystick and a single fire button, unlike many other options such as the Hyperkin Ranger which DO NOT work on the Commodore 64 etc. High quality stick with a nice feel and construction and well priced. Highly recommended.

I bought it for my new Atari 2600+ and it works perfectly and looks good. This is the only one I could find that had a long (10 ft) cable. Everyone has huge TVs these days and we don't want to have to sit 3 feet away from them to play games. I'm knocking off 1 star because of the cancer warning on the bottom of the box. Use better quality parts that don't give us cancer!
