How good is the included fan and heat-sink? Would it be better to buy the i3 w/out the included fan/heat-sink and get a better aftermarket one?

ABSOLUTELY you could do better--and should. Please look at my review from Dec. 20, 2012. There's a danger of the fan perma-welding to your mobo, and a noisy one it is, too. CoolerMaster's Hyper 212 EVO comes to mind, but check for compatibility with your mobo first. Not expensive.

soo.... just how much less will this preform compared to the i3-3220?

i can say that i3-2100 (3.1ghz) will perform about maybe 10 -20% less than i3-3220 (3.3ghz), you would not even see the difference because it is only .2ghz difference. But if you really want a big difference in performance, better get the i5 series with the turbo technology.
