Birds of Venezuela

This review is for the original 1978 version of this fine volume. This book was my "Bible" during several years spent birding in Venezuela and it was absolutely indispensable at that time. Although an updated book is now available, this is still an excellent reference now available at only a fraction of the original price (or the cost of the new edition).The black-and-white and color plates by Guy Tudor are absolutely excellent and in my humble opinion completely unmatched by anyone, anywhere else. However, I dock one star for some of the subpar illustrations by other artists. While functional, some of the other illustrations are mediocre by most other field guide standards.A number of critics cite the cumbersome size of this book, and I cannot disagree with the linear measurements or scale weight of this tome. However, this criticism does an injustice to a monumental work that brought together an incredible amount of information and illustrations that were simply not available anywhere else. Early on this book was my constant companion as I hiked the Andes or explored jungles. I probably lost some pounds hiking with this sitting in the binocular case slung around my neck and did not mind leaving it at home for local trips once I had learned the common species, but this book was too much a necessity to waste time complaining about the weight. Personally I would have felt more justified complaining about the weight of the water in my canteen, so necessary was this volume during my birding years in Venezuela.I bought this one as a spare coffee table copy and "recuerdo" (souvenir) of my early birding years and the hours upon hours I spent poring over the original book that I still have. Even if you are planning a trip to Venezuela and are buying the updated volume, you might consider spending a paltry sum to cut the plates out of this old version for a take-anywhere-sized copy of this fabulous, and for me timeless, one-of-a-kind guide.

During July 2015 Amazon notified me that this title (Birds of Venezuela, by Steven Hilty, 2003) has finally been "de-linked" from the the 1978 A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela by Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and William H. Phelps, Jr., with illustrations by Guy Tudor and others (which in my view merits a strong four stars). I hope that's true.In his 997 overview of Neotropical field guides Francois Vuilleumier called the 1978 guide "yet another product from the pen of the indefatigable late Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee, this time in co-authorship with his equally indefatigable late friend William H. Phelps, Jr.", citing it as "certainly the best one available for a South American country". The subsequent works of many others invalidate that ranking, but I think many birders and ornithologists will find that the 1978 book retains value.This 2003 Birds of Venezuela by Hilty (illustrated by Gwynne & Tudor) includes a considerably better set of plates, generally more detailed species accounts, range maps, and informative introductory text. It's about twice the thickness of the earlier "edition", and I find only eight plates not in color (covering mainly raptors in flights and swifts). As has become almost axiomatic, it's really too big to carry in the field, and enterprising birders may well separate the plates to create a guide devoted to that purpose.Hilty's guide is a worthy successor to the 1978 guide, and it's the worthy precursor to a guide that is more compact and "field-friendly" without sacrificing utility. Until then, no birder venturing into Venezuela or Guyana should be without Steven Hilty's 2003 guide.

I purchased this guide (book) for birding in Aruba as there are no field guides specifically for the island. Essentially, just about all of the birds listed for Aruba are included in this book. After all, Aruba is just 19 miles north of Venezuela.For the most part, it's an excellent guide. The principle illustrators are really good, but the secondary illustrators leave something (and sometimes even more) to be desired. The second string illustrators just don't cut it and the differences are obvious. Perhaps the primary illustrators can/will redraw those illustrations done by their stand-ins for a future edition. The only problem with this book (and it's a pretty big one) is that with the number of birds in Venezuela being so large, this is really a huge book to tote into the field. It's HEAVY!. Too bad I couldn't just take the plate section in to the field. It would have taken several pounds from my load of cameras, lenses and binoculars. However, it's really useful and otherwise functional.Until another field guide that is much smaller and lighter, or just contains illustrations, comes along, this will have to do for the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao). I'll deal with this one as it does have just about all the information needed to identify birds there.

Authors faced a difficult task because of the very large number of species in Venezuela. Same illustrators as earlier text for Birds of Venezuela. This work is suitable for home/office use only because of its size (875 pages) and large weight 1.84 kg. It is too heavy to include in carry on baggage for travelling, especially if you are also packing binoculars and a camera. Not a field guide. A good description is included of 30 habitat types, with photos. 1382 species at time of going to press (2001).

Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich nicht um eine Field-Guide im eigentlichen Sinn, denn aufgrund seiner Größe und seines Gewichtes, ist es für Touristen bereits eine schwere Entscheidung, das Buch überhaupt mit ins Reisegepäck zu nehmen, geschweige denn mit auf eine Exkursion selbst. Bisherige Kommentatoren sind jedoch bereits auf diesen Umstand eingegangen und ich möchte hier nur bestätigen, dass die meisten Vogelbeobachter eine Bestimmung mittels dieses Buches wahrscheinlich nur im Nachhinein machen werden.Diese Bestimmung gestaltet sich jedoch anhand der Bilder und Zeichnungen sehr einfach. Meiner Meinung nach sind es gerade die sehr guten Zeichnungen, die dieses Buch auszeichnen und die Art-Unterschiede selbst zwischen Spezies mit sehr ähnlichen Aussehen sind sehr gut hervorgehoben.Die Farben und Zeichnungsmuster der Vögel sind hervorragend wiedergegeben und fast fotogenau. Zusätzlich emfand ich auch die näheren Erläuterungen, die Verbreitungskarten und die Aussage zur Häufigkeit, die es zu jeder Art in anschließenden Text-Teil gibt, sehr hilfreich. Ein besonderes Lob verdient meiner Meinung nach die Rubrik "Similar Species", mit der noch einmal explizit die Besonderheiten jeder Vogelart herausarbeitet werden.Eine Bestimmung der fotografierten und beobachteten Vögel ist mit diesem Buch auch Laien ohne Probleme möglich.2 kleine negative Dinge sind mir beim Arbeiten mit dem Buch aufgefallen:Es ist schade, dass nicht alle Raubvögel und Geier in Farbe abgebildet wurden und sich diese Schwarz-Weiß-Zeichnungen darüberhinaus auf die Darstellung im Flug beschränken. Gerade bei Arten wie dem Karibik-Karakara wäre das aber sinnvoll.Außerdem gibt es einige wenige Arten (z.B. Ani's), von denen im Bildteil gar keine Zeichnung existiert. Sie sind zwar im Textteil zu finden und es gibt dann dort auch Zeichnungen, aber diese Arten sind dann wahrscheinlich nur über das Stichwortverzeichnis im Anhang zu finden, für das man zumindest den Englischen Namen kennen sollte. Aber bei einem Bestimmunsgbuch beisst sich die "Katze ja genau da in den Schwanz".Abgesehen von diesen wenigen Einschränkungen ist das Buch jedoch unbedingt empfehlenswert und stellt auch beim Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ein gutes Angebot dar.Ein kleiner Tipp noch für alle deutschsprachigen Vogelfreunde: deutsche Namen zu allen Spezies bietet die Internet-Seite Internet Bird Collection IBC [...]

Como otros otros muchos libros disponibles para e-books tiene el fallo que cuando quieres aumentar las ilustraciones pierden calidad, además que tiene un límite de aumentos muy reducidos. Resulta muy engorroso tener que estar dando al boton de aumentar cada ilustación. La versión de google play es mucho mejor. Es un libro que me arrepiento mucho de haberlo comprado. Ya que es muy bueno pero debido a las limitaciones de su visionado pierde todo el interés

Im wesentlichen sind die Punkte schon genannt:Zu schwer und unhandlich für unterwegs, zu viel Detail für einen Feldführer. Die Abbildungsqualität ist nicht vergleichbar mit europäischen Führern (warum wird der Nachtreiher z.B. auf zwei verschiedenen Tafeln und dann auch noch leicht unterschiedlich gefärbt dargestellt?). Die Abbildungen sind zum Teil extrem dicht gedrängt, Tafel 46 enthält beispielsweise 48 Tyrannen, die wesentlichen Unterscheidungsmerkmale werden dadurch aber nicht besser herausgestellt.Verbreitungskarten mit detaillierten Beschreibungen sind von den Abbildungen getrennt im zweiten wesentlich umfangreicheren Teil des Buches.Ich hätte mir übersichtliche Abbildungen mit Hinweisen auf wesentliche Unterscheidungsmerkmalen gewünscht, dazu einen kurzen Text und Verbreitungskarten. Alle weiteren (sehr interessanten und auch wichtigen) Details sollten in einem zweiten Band untergebracht sein.Trotz aller dieser Kritik ist das Buch sehr informativ und wohl auch das einzige für Venezuela. Deswegen bereue ich den Kauf nicht.
