Builds Expert Personal Trainers
What most people don't realize is that the Army's physical readiness training manuals are designed to take any untrained but intelligent NCO or officer and teach him or her to be an expert fitness trainer.Whether you pick up the modern TC 3-22.20, the 1973 FM 21-20 that was current when I was in the Army, the 1946 FM 21-20 written when the lessons of World War II were still fresh, or the first FM 21-20 published in 1914, each edition is a complete, state-of-the-art (for its day), textbook for becoming an expert fitness coach, equal to any trainer in modern national-class fitness centers.Oh, they can certainly be used for individual fitness training, which probably how most people (including me) use them. But they are more than that...the Army's physical training field manuals are the gold standard for training fitness experts. My only caveat is that the Army manuals are geared toward those who must train units...large numbers of people who are under military discipline. A civilian has to wade through terms like "Army Force Generation" and "toughening phase" and "sustaining phase" and a heavy dose of acronyms like PRT, PSD, MMD, CD, STC, and much more. Not to mention the commands and formations for training large masses of people. As they say in AA, "Take what you need and leave the rest." But once you figure out the military system & terminology, the civilian applications are fairly easy to make.Whether you are training a military unit, coaching a sports team, learning to be a personal trainer, managing a civilian fitness center, teaching your children how to be fit, or just getting fit by yourself, any of the Army's physical readiness training manuals offer a complete training resource.
