This book was alright, but it's missing a lot of details. The first big one I noticed was on potty training, they jumped right to walking your dog outside, but (as most people already know thankfully) you cannot walk your dog outside in a public place where other dogs might have gone to the bathroom until they're fully vaccinated. I happen to live in a complex where my yard is shared, so this entire chapter was useless to me. I ended up buying a little turf potty pad for my deck instead, but I had to research elsewhere to find this. In general I found the book had a lot of moments like this where they skipped over crucial parts or details, and once I finished it I still felt like I didn't have a full picture of training.Instead, I would highly recommend joining Reddit's puppy101 channel, and watching YouTube videos from Zak George and Simpawtico. These have all been very helpful and have way more material than this entire book.

This is an excellent book. It very simply, clearly, and concisely covers the basic concepts and tenets of puppy training—potty training, crate training, socialization, and the basic commands. No rambling monologues about the trainer’s bona fides and philosophy. Just direct, to-the-point ideas and instructions. Highly, highly recommended for folks who are about to adopt a puppy.

I found this book excellent. Clear, simple, sensible, with easy to understand principles and applications. I bought it for my daughter and her family for their brand new yellow Lab puppy, Pearl. We've been putting the lessons into practice and getting great results. At not quite 4 months, Pearl is learning to become civilized, attentive and responsive in spite of her crazy energy. It's a work in progress but this book will be a great guide in the months to come. Highly recommended.

This book was very easy to read and understand. If you have a puppy you need the quick points, you don't have time to read a 300 page novel with four stories for each situation. I have recommended to others.

I love this book. It is a simple, quick read and has very specific, practical instructions for training a pup using positive reinforcement. I’ve read a lot of other books that focus more on general principles of dog training, but I love that this book tells you exactly what to do, step by step. The puppy stage is so important for shaping behavior, and this book makes me feel more confident and prepared.

Perhaps this would be more useful for a new dog owner but I found many of the items in this book to be common sense. For reference, I’ve had two rescues before and I got this as I now have my first puppy. I did a quick skim and got some tips but was done with the book in about two hours.

This book is amazing. I wish I had bought it BEFORE I brought my puppy home . It’s easy to understand. It’s all positive training building trust between you and your new fur baby . . I learned about a poisonous or toxic plant in my back yard that my puppy was chewing on and playing under . I was able to make plans to remove it for her safety! The list is long, but informative. I only knew of 3 things NOT TO FEED dogs. She has learned her Name , Come , off , down . Ive learned how to socialize her with other puppies and older dogs. Actually the older dogs will be tested this weekend. I WONT be able to limit the intro 10 to 20 min as I will be staying the night 7 hours from home . I have her pen to remove her from the situation if need be. This book talks about TRUST , illuminating growling when you fur baby growls. It’s an amazing book and a quick read. You can jump in anywhere or chapter when you need to. Buy This before you think about getting a puppy. It’s a commitment for sure ! I would suggest purchasing this book before Puppy comes home . It incorporates the entire family in the training process ! Good Luck and have lots of fun

We recently got a new puppy and bought this book for our granddaughter. She read it and applied many of the suggestions in the book. She loved learning how to train the puppy. Great book and highly recommend.

This is a perfect beginners book for bringing your pup home!It has really clear instructions and brill training tips. It's an American book so talks alot about things in America that we don't have in the UK. But even with that its still a great book to go too if your stuck on training or a behaviour.It has a checklist inside of what to introduce your new pup to over time. How to introduce it to other pets like cats and dogs. Has great tips about nipping and separation anxiety. I would recommend this book to anyone that is planning on getting a new pup. If you are due to get a new pup get this book first as it has some great tips about brining your pup joke for the first time and I honestly think the book has had a great impact on our 4 month sausage pup!

Loved it. The whole family has read it. No idea if it works as we are preparing for the arrival of the puppy. It’s an easy read, straight forward advice and has helped us prepare. Aimed at an American audience but it’s not an issue. My dog is not “going potty” though - just saying. For beginners like us; it is perfect.

This book has been super helpful. Me and my husband read it and re-read a bit that needs confirming. It gives us the list of essential items, giving us a plenty of reasons why we should and should not buy/use items (e.g. 2m lead, not retractable lead); importance of socialisation, and what counts as socialisation; how to train a puppy to get used to the lead for walking. For us who never trained a dog, it's great to have structured knowledge and principle for training a puppy. We highly recommend this book.
