Does the plug portion block the second unused outlet when it’s plugged in or is it still accessible and useable ?

It is still usable unless it’s a huge industrial plug!

Does it cover the second outlet at all? Can another appliance or something larger than a typical plug be plugged into the wall outlet?

If you plug the block into the bottom outlet, the top one is still usable. Some “wall warts” can be plugged in upside down and should fit in upper available outlet.

What size battery does the remote use and how long does it last?

Last a good while. Batteries included with remote. AAA batteries.

Will this work on a washing machine?

These are rated at 10 amps. If you are referring to a clothes washer, it is probably rated at 10 or more amps. This may be pushing it in my opinion but check your particular machine. I use mine for lights plugged into garage ceiling outlets and this product works fine. I don't know why you would have the need to control power at an outlet for a washing machine. unless something is malfunctioning with the machine.
