Can I Tell You About Selective Mutism?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals

It’s okay, not great.
Wish it included brief summaries of how some people with selective mutism overcame it, if only a little. Tips are nice but it’s also important to hear the voices of those who have lived with the condition to better understand them.

Good first step with our daughter
After reading this book (it’s a short read, but useful) I asked our daughter to read through it and mark ideas which she strongly agreed or disagreed with. We were then able to talk about those points a little. For me, this small step provides insight into what she’s going through and helps us understand where to begin with helping (as well as what not to do).

A Great Series!!!!
These little guides are good for students with disabilities to read to see they are not alone. They are also great for peers and teachers to read to know a little about the challenges some students have to face on a daily basis.

Great book for a frequently misunderstood childhood issue
I am very happy with this book, it gives a starting point for understanding Selective Mutism, which is a very complex condition. Gives a few tips regarding how family, friends and teachers can help; the book is short and simple, and can be understood by children. Why not five stars? because if you want to learn what Selective Mutism is really like, you have to look into other sources too. Don't stay with just with this book, it is just a great starting point.

Great starter book to learn more about SM
This is an easy read to find out the basics about SM. I provided a copy of it to my child's teacher as well as purchasing a digital version. I shorted it a star simply because the book is overpriced for the length of it, but it is a great read little book.

Selective Mutism
I am the grandmother of a five-year-old sweetheart with Selective Mutism and this book was easy to read and answered a lot of my questions. I love her dearly and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is close in any way to a child with this. It is a very sensible and easy to follow guide for dealing with these children.Nancy Warmath,Groton, CT

Best SM Book!
This is the best book I have found about SM. It was so clear, and didn’t give rise to unrealistic expectations about speaking. Great resource!

Incredibly helpful
Such a helpful and informative book! It’s written in the first person with very simple language, which makes it a nice book to read, especially to children.Maggie Johnson is a legend in the SaLT world and everyone in our office spoke about her.My daughter is only four and I’ve read this book to her, she smiled and said ‘that sounds like me’.After meeting Maggie on the training course she delivers, I had my daughter diagnosed. This book is definitely worth reading.Five stars

A Fab read
My daughter related to Hannah straight away, saying "she's just like me". An amazing and simple, broken down book to understand about children with SM. I have the Select Mutism Resource Manuel V2 by Maggie Johnson and Alison Wintgens. But this size is perfect to hand to professionals working with children, Teachers, Nursery staff or even Family members that don't understand. Also parents that are new to Sm

Poor quality printing
The content of the book is great, a useful introduction to give to friends and family, but the materials used by the publisher to print the book are poor quality. Within 24 hours the front cover of the book had curled right over and within 72 hours the back cover and the actual pages had curled the other way. It makes the book harder to read and store, and will no doubt get more easily damaged. I've tried pressing it flat under other books but that hasn't helped, I think it's because the paper has absorbed water from the atmosphere. I'm very surprised as I've bought several books published by Jessica Kingsley and never had this problem before.

Great at letting your SM child realises they are not alone.
My child was diagnosed with SM he never fully understood why he is like he is and as he got older we struggled to get him to realise he wasn't alone. This book is brilliant to read with them and they really identify with this book.

Great resource for parents and care givers.
I bought this as my 3.5 year old daughter developed selective mutism. It helped me to understand what she may be feeling and gave me ways in which to support her. The section for teachers was perfect as I was able to photocopy it and give it to the nursery so it could be used by all those working with her.
