It is made in Taiwan with the sai mai process. I carried the original Outdoorsman hunting for almost 30 years, that is until the sheath wore out. I still have it with a few scratches and will never let it go. The new Outdoorsman really looks like a keeper.

As of sept. 2021, what is the steel of the outdoorsman lite? i see it listed in the descrpition as 4116 and 4034, with another saying it's 4025.

I believe Cold Steel sez the Outdoorsman Lite is 4116. Please note - The Outdoorsman ( VG-1 Steel $ 120 ) and the Ourdoorsman Lite ( 4116 $ 40 ) are different knives - Same design, but different steel.

Has anyone experienced blade chipping on the newer Taiwanese San Mai version?

No not yet what was you cutting and if nothing contact cold steel and try to get a replacement blade. I have never had one chip and I have several

I would consider it a hunting knife as opposed to a Bowie which I have a number of. I would buy it again but a don't expect it wear out in my lifetime. I carried the original version for over 30 years bowhunting and only wore out the sheath.
