Mahr Federal 4103011 16 ER Digital Caliper, Range in/mm, 0-6'', 0.0005'' Resolution, Round Depth Rod, Thumb Wheel, No Output, Black/Red

I actually purchased this for the round depth rod, which allows me to to pick up some depth measurements, where a flat depth rod wouldn't reach. I also own both a Starrett and Mitutoyo digital caliper, for approximately the same price, and it is as accurate as either one. The case it came with is a little nicer than either the Starrett and Mitutoyo. Again I purchased this for the round depth rod, perhaps I'm wrong, but I couldn't find another caliper that had that feature.

Calipers finally arrived but wouldn't power up. Once found I volt metered the battery - dead. Found another household item using the same battery and powered up the caliper. Battery claimed to have a service life of 3 years.One more thing: the directions for this are confusing. Printed on a 2 foot square very thin paper with mostly hieroglyphics in 7 languages.Now I need to order a battery for it.

So far they have been awesome. I have dropped them twice and had to stone off some high spot and get them through calibration but they have passed each time and is still accurate. The big display is nice and in a bout a year and half of owning I have replaced the battery once with using it 3 days of the week. The auto shutoff feature really does extend your battery life.

When I received these calipers it was as if they were welded shut. I ended up having to use a LOT of force to get them to break free. Seriously scary. Once they were free they would not slide easily or smoothly at all. Probably would have had to use a hammer to get full extension. After some polishing with and Arkansas stone for about half and hour they slide cleanly and quickly. Repeatability, feel, accuracy, usability and legibility deserve 5 stars every day of the week. But it took quite the harrowing experience to get there. I would not recommend these to anyone but and apprentice (like myself) due to the amount of time required to get them to work. Get the Mitutoyos.
