Q: Can anyone explain why 38% of reviews are 5 star and 31% are 1 star? Is it just that the product is not waterproof?

I am not sure, but I have bought two. Neither lasted 90 days. They sent me a set of new batteries, but that did not solve the problem. It is perhaps the moisture. I discarded them as the 2 I was able to figure out the light level of the area in question. The 5 star/1 star differential probably is how often they are used.

Q: What does partial shade mean? How many hours of sun is "partial shade." Why aren't the designations made clear?

Approximately 2-6 hours of sun. Part shade means more shade than sun during the 12 hours the test runs. Part sun means more sun than shade during the 12 hours the test runs. It's not as definitive as many of us would like and depends on where you live. In Texas where it is very hot with intense sun, part shade definitely means afternoon shade.

Q: I don't see any numbers or dials on it. How do you know how many hours of direct sunlight?

It has a 12 hours preset which starts when you turn it on. It will flash the full 12 hours and then end with a solid light next to your sunlight factor. you really want to set it just before sunrise to get the most accurate reading.

Q: I have the suncalc. Does anyone else flash and not give a solid led reading?

If it doesn’t do what the directions say I would return it. Our first one was broken or the battery was dead because it wouldn’t even turn on. The second one did exactly what the instructions called for.
