THIS IS FRESH HORSERADISH ROOT. THIS COMES FROM A LOCAL HORSERADISH FARM IN IL. YOU WILL RECIEVE EITHER A WHOLE ROOT OR SEVERAL PIECES OF FRESH ROOT WHICH EVER ADDS UP TO 1/2 POUND. The plant is probably native to southeastern Europe and western Asia. It is now popular around the world. It grows up to 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) tall, and is cultivated primarily for its large, white, tapered root.[ The intact horseradish root has hardly any aroma. When cut or grated, however, enzymes from the now-broken plant cells break down sinigrin (a glucosinolate) to produce allyl isothiocyanate (mustard oil), which irritates the mucous membranes of the sinuses and eyes. Grated mash should be used immediately or preserved in vinegar for best flavor. Once exposed to air or heat it will begin to lose its pungency, darken in color, and become unpleasantly bitter tasting over time. Freshly grated horseradish emits fumes that can make your nose run and irritate your eyes, so prepare it in a well-ventilated area or even outside if your eyes are extremely sensitive. Picture does Not indicate the shape or size of your piece or pieces. Horseradish Root is sold by WEIGHT not volume and not sold by piece. You will be sent the amount you choose under the weight amount options. *** Note: Horseradish can develop soft or moldy spots without affecting the quality of the root itself. This is a natural characteristic of Horseradish and should simply be removed by scraping off or wash under warm water and allow to air dry*** Horseradish root freshly harvested will be very firm and is still just fine at the firmness of an uncooked potato. Horseradish should be scrubbed with a brush under running water, prior to use. HORSERADISH ROOT IS VERY LARGE AND IS CUT TO WEIGHT AMOUNTS, WE CANNOT PROMISE OR GAURANTEE WHICH PARTS OF ROOT IS RECIEVED.

Grows after planting.
My order came with three pieces. Planted them right away and after a month or so I have two nice, lush plants with multitude of leaves. The smallest piece is yet to pierce through the soil although by now I think it may have died. Still very happy with the starts as two is enough for me. Everyone claims that horseradish will spread like a week so I'm good. Next year will tell a tale as far as the spread, taste and size. If you want some in your garden, these will work.

Awesome!
I cut into chunks with one sprout per chunk, got seven pieces and planted my hills, they all came up and this is their second spring and came up strong again. Looking forward to our first harvest!!

Large heavy piece difficult to cut into pieces
Ordered 1 lb here, and due to delayed delivery, ordered 1/4 lb elsewhere (and actually came from same vendor). Small order came very quickly, 2 pieces with sprouts. When the 1 lb order came, it was also 2 pieces, no sprouts, and so large as to be treacherous to cut. All planted and growing, but smaller less expensive order is thus far the best bet for success.

Very healthy root.
This root arrived very healthy. I cut it in four pieces and planted them and I had four big plants. I was told not to harvest until this summer. They already popped this spring. I can’t wait until summer.
